Since the Montreal Canadiens’ offseason began in mid-April, trade rumors have been swirling as usual. Among the most persistent rumors is a potential trade involving Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks. Insider Pierre LeBrun recently reported that discussions between the Canadiens and Ducks have indeed taken place. On June 6, insider Arpon Basu shared on BPM Sports that the Ducks have set a high price for Zegras. To secure the skilled winger, the Canadiens would have to part with one of their key defensive prospects.
The Inside Scoop from NHL Experts
Basu disclosed that the Ducks’ asking price for Zegras includes either Kaiden Guhle or David Reinbacher. Guhle has already proven his worth in the NHL with solid performances over his first two seasons. Reinbacher, on the other hand, was Montreal’s first-round pick in the 2023 Draft and represents a significant investment in their future.
LeBrun’s report on RDS confirmed that the Canadiens and Ducks have rekindled trade talks for Zegras. However, he also indicated that the Canadiens are not eager to make a deal that would involve giving up crucial pieces of their rebuild. Although interested in Zegras, the Canadiens are cautious about trading away foundational players.
Zegras, who has played 211 NHL games over four seasons, had his best season with 23 goals and 65 points. This past season, he was limited to 31 games due to an ankle injury, during which he scored 15 points.
Assessing the Ducks’ Demands
Kaiden Guhle has been impressive since joining the Canadiens. His performance on the ice has been mature beyond his years, often taking on significant responsibilities. In 114 games, Guhle has accumulated 10 goals and 40 points, proving his versatility and reliability.
David Reinbacher was selected fifth overall in the 2023 Draft, a choice that surprised many fans who expected the Canadiens to pick a forward. However, Reinbacher was considered the best available player at the time, addressing a lack of depth in right-shot defensemen for Montreal. He spent most of the season with Kloten HC and joined the Laval Rocket after his team’s elimination, scoring five points in 11 games and showing promise for a swift transition to the NHL.
Considering the Trade Option
General Manager Kent Hughes will thoroughly evaluate the potential acquisition of Zegras. Montreal needs more offensive talent, but not at the expense of team chemistry. Zegras, reportedly a friend of Canadiens’ Cole Caufield, may fit well into the locker room. However, it is doubtful that Hughes would be willing to trade either Guhle or Reinbacher.
A more likely scenario might involve Anaheim accepting a less demanding package, such as Jordan Harris and a first-round pick. Trading Guhle or Reinbacher could hinder Montreal’s rebuilding process significantly.
Hughes has a history of making surprising moves, such as acquiring Kirby Dach in 2022 and Alex Newhook before the 2023 Draft. It’s possible he has moved past the idea of trading for Zegras or Martin Necas and is exploring less costly alternatives. If Hughes can secure another talented player seeking a fresh start without overpaying, he could once again make headlines.
The Canadiens’ offseason continues to be a period of speculation and anticipation. Whether they will meet Anaheim’s steep demands for Zegras or find another path to enhance their roster remains to be seen. Hughes’ strategic decisions will be crucial in shaping the team’s future as they strive to balance acquiring talent with maintaining their core defensive prospects.
