WNBA rookie Angel Reese has etched her name in the history books by achieving seven consecutive double-doubles, the longest streak ever recorded by a rookie in the league. Playing as a forward for the Chicago Sky, the former LSU standout made her mark during a home game against the Dallas Wings, which ended in an 83-72 victory. In that game, Reese scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds.
A double-double in basketball refers to a player achieving double figures in at least two of the five key statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots. Reese’s remarkable performance not only helped her team secure a win but also solidified her status as a rising star in the WNBA. Reflecting on her achievement in an ESPN interview, Reese expressed her joy about the victory and her personal milestone. She emphasized the importance of self-encouragement and acknowledged her ongoing growth in the league, stating her excitement for future wins.
Reese broke the previous record of six consecutive double-doubles, which was shared by Tina Charles in 2010 and Cindy Brown in 1998, as reported by CBS Sports. Although Charles holds the rookie season record with 22 double-doubles, Reese has a significant opportunity to challenge this record, having already accumulated eight double-doubles with 26 games remaining in the season. Currently, she averages 12.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
During the post-game press conference, Reese paid tribute to other notable rookies, including Sylvia Fowles, another LSU alumna. Fowles, who holds the WNBA career record for the most double-doubles with 193, had previously nicknamed Reese “Miss Double-Double Queen” during her college years. Reese expressed her gratitude for Fowles’ mentorship and support, saying, “I love Sylvia. She was a great person to me and a great mentor to me when I was at LSU. I know she is going to be super proud of me.”
Reese’s historic streak comes as the Chicago Sky prepares for a highly anticipated rematch against the Indiana Fever, a game that will feature another star rookie, Caitlin Clark. Reese’s record-setting performance has not only highlighted her exceptional talent but also set the stage for an exciting remainder of the season.
