The Raiders’ training camp is poised to spotlight the competition for the starting quarterback position, but this period will also serve as a crucial evaluation phase for other team roles. Based on performance during the camp, the team may consider bringing in additional players, especially for positions perceived as weak.
The cornerback position is a notable concern on the Raiders’ defense. Currently, Nate Hobbs is expected to cover the slot, and Jack Jones is anticipated to start in one of the perimeter roles. However, the second perimeter position remains open, with Jakorian Bennett and Brandon Facyson as the main contenders for now. Given the uncertainty and the potential weakness in this area, it’s not surprising that the Raiders might look outside for reinforcements.
The team showed interest in veteran cornerback Steven Nelson before his recent retirement, as reported by Vic Tafur of The Athletic. Nelson’s retirement, after 140 regular and postseason games, has slightly thinned the cornerback market. However, several experienced players like Stephon Gilmore, Xavien Howard, Adoree’ Jackson, and Patrick Peterson remain available.
At this time of year, many veteran players, including cornerbacks, are likely to be available at a relatively low cost. The Raiders, with over $34 million in cap space, have the financial flexibility to make such additions, though they are not expected to pursue a high-cost player unless a major injury occurs. Tafur suggests that the Raiders might aim for a signing similar to their acquisition of Marcus Peters last year, potentially around the start of training camp.
Similarly, the Raiders might consider strengthening their backfield. The departure of Josh Jacobs has opened up an opportunity for Zamir White to step into a primary role, which he briefly held late last season. White, a 2022 fourth-round pick, performed well when Jacobs was injured and could solidify his status as the lead running back with a strong performance in camp. However, if White or newly signed free agent Alexander Mattison underperform early in the summer, the new general manager, Tom Telesco, might look for additional talent.
Available running back options include Dalvin Cook, Kareem Hunt, Jerick McKinnon, and Latavius Murray. This group also features Brandon Bolden, who has spent the last two years with the Raiders, mainly contributing on special teams. Given the team’s cap space, bringing back Bolden or signing another veteran running back is a viable option. The Raiders’ moves in this regard will be interesting to watch as Telesco evaluates the team’s needs during the summer.
