The Cleveland Cavaliers have multiple objectives for this NBA offseason, with a key focus on acquiring a wing player to enhance their current roster. They aim to build on their successful 2023-24 campaign, which saw them reach the Eastern Conference semifinals.
One prominent target for the Cavaliers is 6-foot-7 forward Dorian Finney-Smith from the Brooklyn Nets. Finney-Smith, 31, is known for his versatility, able to play both small forward and power forward positions, and his contract situation could facilitate a potential trade. He has two years and $30 million left on his contract, with the final season being a player option.
NBA insider Michael Scotto has reported that the Cavaliers are interested in trading for the seasoned forward. Scotto also mentioned that Isaac Okoro and K.J. Martin might be considered in a sign-and-trade deal to acquire Finney-Smith from Brooklyn. Finney-Smith is recognized for his proficiency in long-range shooting, with nearly two-thirds of his shots coming from beyond the three-point line.
During the 2023-24 season, Finney-Smith averaged 8.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists over 68 games with the Nets. He entered the NBA in 2016 after playing college basketball at Florida and spent almost seven seasons with the Dallas Mavericks before joining Brooklyn. His best scoring season was in 2021-22, when he averaged 11.0 points per game and 1.9 assists for the Mavericks.
With the free agent market lacking in high-profile talent this offseason, the Cavaliers seem intent on securing the best possible option to strengthen their lineup. They appear willing to include Okoro and Martin in a potential deal to bring Finney-Smith to Cleveland.
