The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are on the horizon, and track and field enthusiasts are excitedly anticipating thrilling competitions. Key athletes like Faith Kipyegon, Eliud Kipchoge, and Peres Jepchirchir will be defending their titles, while Mary Moraa, Hellen Obiri, and Ferdinand Omanyala aim for redemption after their Tokyo exits. Newcomers such as Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Faith Cherotich, Reynold Cheruiyot, Lilian Odira, Koitatoi Kidali, Alexander Mutiso, and Sharon Lokedi will make their Olympic debuts, eager to showcase their talent. The track and field events are scheduled from August 1 to August 11.
Faith Kipyegon, a two-time Olympic 1500m champion, is riding high on confidence after setting a new world record at the Paris Diamond League. Her performance indicates that she is on track for another stellar showing at the Olympics. Kipyegon’s season began at the national trials for the Paris Olympics at Nyayo Stadium in June, where she secured her place in the women’s 1500m and 5000m events.
Injuries had previously sidelined Kipyegon, causing her to miss the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League in Oregon. However, she made a remarkable comeback, highlighted by her record-breaking run at the Paris Diamond League in early July. Kipyegon broke her own world record in the women’s 1500m, clocking 3:49.04, marking the fourth time within a year that she has set a new world record in the event. Her previous records were set in Florence, Paris, and Monaco.
Kipyegon aims to achieve a historic three-peat in the women’s 1500m at the Olympics. She plans to compete in the 5000m first to assess her performance before focusing on defending her 1500m title. She will be joined by Nelly Jepchirchir and Susan Ejore in the 1500m event. In the women’s 5000m, Kipyegon will compete alongside world 10,000m record holder Beatrice Chebet and 2022 world 10,000m bronze medalist Margaret Chelimo.
The anticipation for the track and field events at the Paris 2024 Olympics is building, with athletes like Kipyegon poised to deliver remarkable performances and potentially make history.
