The Alabama Crimson Tide has a long tradition of utilizing a 1-2 punch in the running back position. This strategy has often paid off with successful seasons and national championships. Over the years, dynamic duos like Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon, and Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris have exemplified this approach. Each of these pairings contributed significantly to the Crimson Tide’s success, leading the team to championships while sharing backfield responsibilities.
Today, it seems that Alabama is developing another potent duo in Jam Miller and Justice Haynes. In the season opener against Western Kentucky, the two running backs showcased their potential, combining for a total of 156 yards on just nine carries. Both Miller and Haynes delivered explosive plays, with Miller scoring on a 35-yard run and Haynes breaking away for an 85-yard touchdown. While this sample size is small, their ability to produce big plays on limited touches demonstrates the potential of this new tandem.
On Wednesday, Alabama’s running backs coach, Robert Gillespie, addressed the performance of his unit during the game against Western Kentucky. Gillespie was pleased with their overall effort, noting that the running backs “made the most of the opportunity” not only in rushing but also in their blocking responsibilities. However, despite their strong start, Gillespie emphasized that splitting snaps between Miller and Haynes isn’t a rigid plan moving forward.
According to Gillespie, the decision on who plays more isn’t about who starts the game or takes the first snap. Instead, it’s based on performance during the game. Whoever gets into a rhythm and is consistently making plays will see more action. He stressed that it’s about having depth in the running back room and being ready to adjust based on game situations. The focus is on winning, not on ensuring equal playing time, and this depth is a key element in Alabama’s long-standing success. Gillespie believes in letting players who are “hot” stay on the field, and the decision will always be about what’s best for the team at the moment.
Gillespie’s approach to managing running backs isn’t new. Having been part of Alabama’s coaching staff since 2021, he has followed this philosophy for several seasons. Gillespie pointed out that managing a talented running back room requires finding the right balance between giving players opportunities and allowing them to get into a rhythm. He underscored the importance of planning for a long season, noting that Alabama aims to play as many as 16 or 17 games in pursuit of a championship. For him, the goal is clear: play the best player who can help the team win, regardless of who starts or how many snaps they initially get.
During the Western Kentucky game, while Miller and Haynes had their share of explosive runs, they also experienced short gains. Gillespie emphasized that these shorter, grind-it-out runs are just as important as the long, flashy plays. Before the ball is even snapped, running backs need to focus on their alignment and pre-snap reads. Once they get the ball, their instincts take over, and they need to react accordingly. Gillespie stated that in some situations, pounding the ball for 3-4 yards is crucial, and Alabama running backs must be ready for these tough, physical gains. However, when the opportunity for a big play arises, it’s equally important to take advantage by making defenders miss and using breakaway speed.
Gillespie highlighted that Miller and Haynes both possess the speed to break big plays, but they also showed toughness in short-yardage situations. He praised their ability to run with physicality when the offensive line provided small openings, stressing the importance of lowering their pads and pushing for extra yards.
In Gillespie’s view, being a great running back at Alabama means excelling in both areas: grinding out tough yards and taking advantage of opportunities to make explosive plays. Miller and Haynes have started their season on the right foot, showing promise in both aspects of the game. With a long season ahead, their ability to maintain consistency and capitalize on their chances will be critical to Alabama’s success.
