Roll Call, December 21, 2024: Alabama QB Signee Wins Maxwell National High School Player of the Year
The Maxwell Football Club has once again honored the nation’s premier high school football talent with its prestigious National High School Player of the Year award. This year’s recipient is none other than Alabama quarterback signee, Caleb McKnight, a name that has become synonymous with excellence in the prep football landscape. McKnight’s stellar senior season capped off a high school career that has left fans, scouts, and analysts in awe.
A Season to Remember
Hailing from Birmingham’s Jefferson High, McKnight posted video-game-like numbers in his final year. Leading his team to a 14-0 record and a state championship, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound phenom threw for 4,125 yards and 48 touchdowns. Additionally, he demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities with 845 rushing yards and 12 scores on the ground.
“Caleb’s leadership and performance were nothing short of remarkable,” said Jefferson High head coach Marcus Reid. “He’s the type of player who makes everyone around him better, both on and off the field.”
An Accolade-Filled Career
McKnight’s accolades extend far beyond the Maxwell honor. He’s a consensus five-star recruit, ranked as the No. 1 quarterback and No. 2 overall player in the 2024 class by multiple scouting outlets. This season alone, he added Gatorade State Player of the Year and USA Today Offensive Player of the Year to his resume. His career totals include over 11,000 passing yards and 132 touchdown passes, solidifying his legacy as one of the most decorated players in Alabama high school football history.
The Next Chapter: Alabama Crimson Tide
McKnight’s decision to commit to Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide has fans in Tuscaloosa ecstatic about their future at the quarterback position. With current starter Jalen Milroe expected to declare for the NFL Draft, McKnight’s arrival comes at an opportune time.
“The tradition of excellence at Alabama speaks for itself,” McKnight said during his signing ceremony. “I can’t wait to compete and learn from the incredible coaching staff. This is just the beginning.”
Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees praised McKnight’s football IQ, arm strength, and ability to read defenses, suggesting he has the tools to make an immediate impact in college football.
A Role Model Beyond the Field
While McKnight’s athletic achievements are awe-inspiring, his character and community involvement have earned him equal admiration. Known for his volunteer work with youth football camps and local charities, McKnight is a role model to aspiring players in Birmingham and beyond.
“Caleb’s humility and commitment to giving back are what set him apart,” said Reid. “He’s not just a great athlete; he’s a great person.”
What’s Next for McKnight?
Before he takes the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium, McKnight will compete in the Under Armour All-America Game in January. The event will offer fans a preview of what’s to come as he faces off against the nation’s best.
As the 2024 Maxwell National High School Player of the Year, Caleb McKnight stands as a testament to hard work, talent, and leadership. Alabama fans eagerly await the next chapter in his story, hoping he will carry his winning ways to the college level and beyond.
