Notably, the Buckeyes experienced the decommitment of four-star wide receiver Jayvan Boggs and missed out on five-star prospect Vernell Brown III, both hailing from Florida.
In March 2024, Jayvan Boggs, a standout from Cocoa, Florida, withdrew his commitment to Ohio State. Initially pledging to the Buckeyes in October 2023, Boggs reevaluated his decision amidst continued interest from other prominent programs. During his junior season, he recorded impressive statistics with 93 receptions, totaling 1,504 yards and 24 touchdowns. His departure left Ohio State without a wide receiver commit in the 2025 class at that time.
Adding to the setbacks, in July 2024, Vernell Brown III from Orlando, Florida, chose to commit to the University of Florida over Ohio State, Miami, and Florida State. Ranked as the nation’s 25th-best overall prospect and the sixth-best wide receiver in the 2025 class, Brown’s decision was influenced by deep-rooted family ties to the Gators. His father, Vernell Brown Jr., and other family members have longstanding affiliations with the University of Florida, which played a significant role in his commitment.
These developments underscore the dynamic nature of college football recruiting, where programs must continually adapt to the evolving decisions of top prospects. Ohio State’s coaching staff is now focusing on other elite wide receiver targets to bolster their 2025 class, aiming to maintain their tradition of offensive excellence.
