Nottingham Forest fans were treated to a special moment of nostalgia and pride ahead of tonight’s clash with Malmö, as two icons from the historic 1979 European Cup final—John McGovern and Staffan Tapper—took centre stage once again. The two captains, who famously led their sides onto the pitch more than four decades ago, reunited in a touching celebration of football heritage and shared history.
In honour of the occasion, Forest legend John McGovern, a double European Cup–winning captain and one of the club’s most respected figures, signed 10 exclusive special-edition matchday programmes. These limited-edition copies, commemorating both the 1979 final and tonight’s fixture, instantly became prized collectibles for supporters lucky enough to secure them.
The presence of McGovern and Tapper added an emotional layer to the evening, reminding fans of Forest’s proud European legacy and the unforgettable night in Munich where Brian Clough’s side lifted their first European Cup with McGovern wearing the armband. Tapper, representing Malmö’s storied history, also added gravitas to the reunion.
As the crowd gears up for kickoff, the atmosphere is charged with a blend of excitement and reverence—proof that legends never truly leave the game. Tonight, past and present come together at the City Ground.
