Brighton Suffer Further Injury Setback Ahead of Manchester United Clash

Brighton & Hove Albion have suffered another setback in their attacking department, with striker Stefanos Tzimas expected to remain out of action for longer than initially anticipated.

The 20-year-old Greek forward has been working his way back from a serious ACL injury suffered last season during Brighton’s 4-3 home defeat to Aston Villa in December. The injury forced Tzimas to miss the remainder of the campaign, and he has continued his rehabilitation programme into the current season.

Tzimas, who joined Brighton from German club FC Nürnberg in a deal worth around £22 million, had recently been showing encouraging signs of progress. There had been optimism within the club that the young striker could return to first-team action in the weeks following the next international break.

However, those hopes have now been delayed after head coach Fabian Hurzeler confirmed that Tzimas has experienced a setback in his recovery.

Speaking ahead of Brighton’s Carabao Cup third-round meeting with Manchester United on Wednesday, Hurzeler played down the severity of the latest issue but admitted that the striker will need more time before he can return.

«“Nothing big, but it takes a bit longer than we expected,” Hurzeler said.»

The Brighton manager also revealed that Tzimas remains positive and committed to his rehabilitation, continuing to work hard as he attempts to regain full fitness.

«“He is in a good mood and tries to work hard on the pitch. We try to help him off the pitch and hopefully we will see him soon.”»

The latest setback is particularly disappointing for Brighton given the changes they have made to their attacking options. The Seagulls sold last season’s top scorer Danny Welbeck to Chelsea last month, leaving the club with fewer established options in the striker position.

Brighton are also dealing with other injury concerns. Georginio is currently sidelined but is reportedly nearing a return, while Republic of Ireland international Evan Ferguson remains unavailable.

Ferguson is still recovering from an ankle injury he suffered during his loan spell with Roma last season. His continued absence means Brighton have had to rely on a combination of younger players and alternative attacking options.

Despite the injuries affecting their forward line, Brighton have made an impressive start in front of goal. Hurzeler’s side have scored 13 goals in their opening four Premier League matches, giving them the highest goal tally in the division at this stage of the campaign.

Their attacking form has also extended to European competition. Brighton scored four goals against Norwegian side Tromsø in the second leg of their Conference League play-off, further demonstrating the team’s ability to find the net despite their shortage of fully fit strikers.

Following Brighton’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Coventry, Hurzeler stressed that his team’s attacking success should not depend on a single prolific striker. Instead, he wants goals to come from several different players across the squad.

«“I mentioned at the beginning of the season that it’s not about having one good goalscorer.»

«“It’s about having this flexibility of having many goalscorers, of having a lot of players who have the desire to score.”»

That philosophy could once again be important when Brighton travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

With Tzimas unavailable and Ferguson still recovering, Greek forward Charalampos Kostoulas and Canada international Promise David are among the players who could be considered to lead the Brighton attack.

Kostoulas could be particularly well placed to start after opening the scoring during Brighton’s 5-0 win at Coventry last Sunday. The young Greek forward has already demonstrated his ability to contribute in the final third and could be given another opportunity to lead the line against United.

Promise David is another option for Hurzeler. The Canadian forward joined Brighton on loan from Belgian club Union SG but has yet to make a starting appearance for the Seagulls this season.

Meanwhile, Georginio’s fitness continues to be monitored by Brighton’s medical staff. He has missed the club’s last three Premier League matches but is believed to be getting closer to a return.

Brighton therefore head into their meeting with Manchester United in good attacking form but with several important questions surrounding the availability of their forwards. Tzimas’ latest setback means the club will have to be patient with his recovery, while Hurzeler will continue to rely on the depth and versatility of his squad in the meantime.
