Derby County Suffer Another Injury Setback as Sondre Langas Adds to John Eustace’s Growing Concerns
Derby County have suffered another significant injury setback after defender Sondre Langas was forced to leave the pitch during their Championship encounter against Queens Park Rangers (QPR). The Norwegian international’s injury has further increased the concerns facing head coach John Eustace, who is already dealing with a growing list of unavailable defensive players.
Langas became the latest Derby County player to suffer an injury during the match at Loftus Road after sustaining a problem while attempting to block a goalbound effort from QPR forward Rayan Kolli. The incident occurred just 10 minutes into the contest, forcing the Rams to make an early substitution and further disrupting their defensive arrangements.
Following the incident, Langas received medical attention from Derby’s medical staff before initially attempting to continue playing. However, his involvement was short-lived, as he returned to the ground after a couple of minutes, prompting the medical team to assess his condition again. It subsequently became clear that he could not continue, and he was withdrawn from the match.
Right-back Ryan Nyambe was introduced as Langas’ replacement. Although Nyambe is naturally more comfortable playing at right-back, he moved into the centre of defence to partner Dion Sanderson, highlighting the extent of Derby County’s current defensive difficulties. The substitution left Eustace with another selection problem as he attempted to reorganise his team in the middle of an important Championship fixture.
The Rams have been seriously affected by injuries to several defenders in recent weeks. Left-backs Derry Murkin, Craig Forsyth and Charlie Taylor have all been ruled out, leaving the club short of options in that position. Langas’ injury has now added to the problems at centre-back, where Matt Clarke and Eiran Cashin are also unavailable through injury.
Derby’s defensive concerns extend beyond the outfield players, with first-choice goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom also sidelined because of a knee problem. The number of absentees has significantly reduced Eustace’s available options and made it increasingly difficult for him to select a consistent defensive unit.
Right-back Max Johnston is another player currently missing from the squad. Eustace previously confirmed that Johnston was expected to spend approximately two weeks on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury during training a few weeks earlier. The defender was absent from the matchday squad for Derby’s game against Wrexham on Saturday.
Speaking to Derbyshire Live about Johnston’s condition, Eustace explained that the player was likely to remain unavailable for a couple of weeks. The Derby boss acknowledged that the defender had suffered a knock to his knee during a training session several weeks earlier and admitted that the full extent of the problem remained uncertain.
Eustace said he expected Johnston to be out for around a fortnight, adding that he hoped the injury would not prove serious, although he could not be entirely certain about the situation.
The growing injury list has placed additional pressure on Eustace, who has already faced criticism from sections of the Derby County supporters following the club’s difficult start to the season. While some fans have expressed concerns about the team’s performances and results, the manager has also had to contend with the challenge of working without several important players.
The absence of so many defenders has made it difficult for Derby to establish stability at the back. With players missing across the defensive line and their first-choice goalkeeper also unavailable, Eustace has been forced to make adjustments to his team and rely on players operating in positions that may not be their natural roles.
Unfortunately for Derby, Langas’ injury was followed by a disastrous spell in the match against QPR. The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute when Alfie Lloyd found the back of the net, putting further pressure on the visitors after their early defensive disruption.
QPR then extended their advantage just four minutes later, with Nicolas Madsen successfully converting a penalty to make it 2-0. The quick succession of goals left Derby facing an increasingly difficult challenge as they attempted to recover from their poor start.
The situation deteriorated further in first-half stoppage time when Harvey Vale scored QPR’s third goal, giving the home side a commanding advantage before the interval.
The combination of Langas’ injury and Derby’s defensive shortcomings made for a particularly frustrating evening for Eustace and his players. With several key defenders already unavailable, the possibility of another prolonged absence could leave the Rams facing even greater difficulties in the coming matches.
Derby County will now be hoping that Langas’ injury is not as serious as it initially appeared. However, until further information becomes available, uncertainty surrounding his fitness is likely to remain a major concern for the coaching staff.
For Eustace, the immediate priority will be to assess the condition of his injured players, determine which defenders may return in the coming weeks and find a way to restore greater defensive organisation. With injuries continuing to affect the squad, Derby’s ability to manage their personnel and maintain consistency could prove crucial as they look to improve their performances in the Championship.
