Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed that Paraguay international Diego Gomez has signed a new long-term contract with the club, strengthening their commitment to one of the young players they believe can become increasingly influential at Premier League level.

The new agreement represents a significant show of faith in Gomez, who remains just 23 years old but has already established himself as an important member of Brighton’s first-team squad. The club are confident that the midfielder still has considerable room for improvement and believe his best years could yet be ahead of him.

Gomez’s new contract is understood to be a five-year agreement, with Brighton retaining an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months. Should the contract run its full course, the Paraguay international would remain at the Amex Stadium until close to his 30th birthday, underlining the club’s desire to make him part of their long-term plans.

Brighton sporting director Mike Cave expressed his satisfaction at securing Gomez’s future and praised the midfielder for the way he has adapted to English football since arriving at the club.

“Diego has been an important player for us since his arrival and we’re pleased to have secured his long-term future,” Cave said.

The sporting director also highlighted Gomez’s smooth transition into Premier League football, pointing out that the 23-year-old has quickly become an established and valuable member of the squad.

“He has adapted to Premier League football seamlessly and embedded himself as a key player in the squad,” Cave added.

Brighton believe Gomez can take another significant step forward during the upcoming campaign. His age, versatility and continued development have made him an attractive long-term asset, and the club expect him to play an important role as they attempt to achieve their ambitions both this season and in the years ahead.

The midfielder is currently expected to begin the new campaign operating on the right side of Brighton’s midfield. In that position, he could once again continue his increasingly effective partnership with Mats Wieffer, who has adapted to a new role after previously being regarded primarily as a right-back.

The combination has provided Brighton with an interesting tactical option, with Gomez’s energy and attacking qualities complementing Wieffer’s contribution from the right. Their developing understanding could become an important feature of Brighton’s approach during the new season.

Gomez has also enjoyed an important period on the international stage. The young midfielder spent much of the summer representing Paraguay at his first World Cup, gaining valuable experience at the highest level of international football.

At senior level, Gomez has already earned 20 appearances for Paraguay, further demonstrating the progress he has made despite still being in the early stages of his professional career.

There is also the prospect of another major international tournament in the future, with Paraguay already knowing that they will be involved in the 2030 World Cup as one of the co-hosting nations for the centenary edition of the competition.

For Brighton, securing Gomez on a new long-term agreement is therefore about more than simply retaining a current first-team player. The club are investing in a footballer they believe can continue developing into an even more important figure within the squad.

With his new contract now secured, Gomez can concentrate fully on his performances on the pitch and helping Brighton compete for their targets in the Premier League. The club, meanwhile, will hope that his continued development allows him to become an increasingly influential player over the duration of his extended stay on the south coast.

At only 23, Gomez has plenty of football still ahead of him, and Brighton’s decision to tie him down for the long term reflects their belief that he can play a major role in the club’s future.
