Portsmouth have looked into the possibility of signing Santos youngster Robinho Jr, although the Championship club are not currently planning to pursue a deal for the 18-year-old.
Robinho Jr is the son of former Santos, Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan forward Robinho.
The youngster’s name reportedly emerged during Portsmouth’s discussions with Santos over Gustavo Caballero. Caballero spent last season on loan at Fratton Park, with Pompey holding talks over either extending his stay or making the move permanent.
Those negotiations eventually failed to produce an agreement, but Robinho Jr became another player discussed between the two clubs.
Portsmouth made enquiries about the teenager and initially appeared open to exploring a potential deal. However, the situation has not progressed, with the club now understood to have no plans to take their interest any further.
The development comes after reports in Spain claimed Robinho Jr has attracted approaches from clubs in Spain, Italy and the English Championship. The Championship club was not named, so it remains unclear whether Portsmouth were the side referenced.
Nevertheless, Portsmouth have definitely explored the possibility of signing the Brazilian.
Santos are reportedly preparing for Robinho Jr to leave before the transfer window closes, with the club’s financial difficulties contributing to their willingness to sell.
The Brazilian side are said to be seeking around €8 million (£6.9m) for 75 per cent of the forward’s rights in a permanent transfer. A loan deal with an obligation to buy would reportedly command a slightly higher fee.
Italian club Genoa have already shown interest, while intermediaries in Spain have also offered the player to several clubs.
Santos’ valuation represents a significant drop from the €60m (£51.8m) release clause included in Robinho Jr’s contract, which runs until June 2027.
The teenager made his senior debut shortly after turning 17, but his progress into Santos’ first team has since slowed. He has made 12 appearances this season, all as a substitute, and is still waiting to score his first senior goal.
For now, Portsmouth have assessed the opportunity but appear to have decided against entering the race for the highly-rated Brazilian youngster.
