Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon might need to change Kate Martin’s nickname from “Money” to “Modest.” The WNBA rookie is genuinely puzzled by the significant fan support she’s received in her first season.
Earlier this week, Martin spoke with reporters ahead of the Aces’ game against the Indiana Fever, a match that was particularly meaningful as she would be facing her former Iowa teammate Caitlin Clark for the second time in the WNBA.
When asked about the fan support in Las Vegas, Martin responded with humility.
“I feel really grateful to be in this position. Honestly, I didn’t expect to have any fans when I came here. I had no expectations regarding that, and I think fans appreciated that. I don’t really understand it, but I feel very grateful for it. It gives me a bit of confidence and makes me feel good when I hear the fans cheer as I check in. So, I really appreciate that,” Martin said.
Selected in the second round of the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Aces, Martin has been a crucial player off the bench for the two-time defending champions. In the team’s first 19 games, she’s averaged 3.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game, missing only one game so far.
Playing for one of the top teams in the WNBA, Martin also treasures the enthusiastic fanbase in Las Vegas.
“It’s a testament to the fanbase that Las Vegas has,” Martin remarked. “We had a great fanbase at Iowa, yes, but Las Vegas fans truly support the WNBA and our women’s basketball team. With football, hockey, and women’s basketball here, it’s incredible to see sold-out games and fans cheering us on regardless of the time or day. We always have fans that show up.”
Martin’s modesty and appreciation for the fans highlight her down-to-earth personality, making her an endearing figure both on and off the court.
