Former Brisbane Broncos head coach, Kevin Walters, might return to television next season, as Fox Sports has expressed interest in bringing him back to their commentary team. Walters was dismissed as the Broncos’ head coach in a shocking decision announced on Thursday evening. While the club framed it as Walters stepping down, the announcement’s timing, coinciding with the conclusion of the club’s internal review, surprised many.
Before coaching the Broncos, Walters had been a popular member of the Fox Sports commentary team. Steve Crawley, the head of Fox Sports, confirmed they plan to reach out to Walters about a potential return. “We will have a chat with Kevvie,” Crawley stated in a report, praising Walters for his energy and skill as a commentator and analyst.
The internal review, which played a major role in Walters’ departure, focused on how the Broncos fell from being a grand final team in 2023 to missing the finals in 2024. The review was reportedly critical of Walters and his coaching staff, particularly concerning his communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Walters allegedly did not take the criticism well, and despite having a contract until the end of 2026, the club chose to part ways with him.
Michael Maguire has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Walters as the Broncos’ head coach. However, the club has confirmed that Walters will remain with the organization in an ambassadorial role, in addition to any media work he might take up for the 2025 season.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Walters is interested in pursuing another coaching role or if he will fully transition back into television commentary.
