The closer NBA free agency draws nearer, the more likely it seems that Klay Thompson will depart the Golden State Warriors. Rival teams like the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers are already showing interest in Thompson.
LeBron James thinks that the Lakers, who are facing three opponents in the Western Conference, will be able to add Thompson to their offensive lineup. The good news for James is that, according to Chris B. Haynes’ most recent report, his wish might come true.
According to Chris B. Hayes’ NBATV story on Saturday night, Thompson is not happy with the negotiations and some Golden State Warriors players think he’s gone. “I think the Warriors are probably offering him an annual, low $20M-type of contract,” Haynes continued. Does the feeling of disrespect make him want to leave that? It appears that he is.
In order to sign with the Lakers and Mavericks, Thompson would have to accept a substantial salary reduction. The 34-year-old Thompson could only be signed by the Lakers under the full MLE (mid-level exception), which comes with a $12.9 million salary.
Nonetheless, James would have to accept less than the maximum, which he apparently would for the previous NBA champion, in order for Thompson to receive the entire MLE from Los Angeles.
Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game on 43.2 percent shooting from the field and 38.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc this season, despite clearly regressing. Thompson had the worst defensive rating of his career (DRtg) of 118, but those shortcomings can be overlooked while playing between James and Anthony Davis.
It will be interesting to watch, though, how Thompson and the Lakers use free agency. It would be a huge blow to the Warriors and the first step toward a successful offseason for the purple and gold if Los Angeles were to acquire Thompson.
