Los Angeles Clippers’ head coach Tyronn Lue recently opened up about why he declined the opportunity to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, citing feelings of “disrespect” during the hiring process. Lue, who has established himself as one of the NBA’s most respected coaches, revealed that the experience left a sour taste and ultimately solidified his decision to pursue other opportunities.
Lue was heavily linked to the Lakers’ coaching position in 2019 following the team’s decision to part ways with Luke Walton. With a championship pedigree and a strong relationship with LeBron James, Lue appeared to be the ideal candidate to lead the storied franchise. However, negotiations reportedly broke down over contractual disagreements and the Lakers’ insistence on having control over Lue’s coaching staff.
“When you’re in this business, respect is everything,” Lue shared in a recent interview. “It wasn’t just about the money or the length of the contract. It was about feeling valued for what I could bring to the table. I didn’t feel that during those discussions.”
Sources at the time indicated that the Lakers offered Lue a three-year deal, which was significantly shorter than the five-year contracts typically given to high-profile head coaches. Additionally, the team reportedly pushed for the inclusion of specific assistant coaches, limiting Lue’s autonomy in building his staff.
“As a coach, you want to be able to put your stamp on the team,” Lue explained. “That means having the freedom to choose the people who will work alongside you, who share your vision and values. When that’s taken away, it’s hard to feel like you’re being set up for success.”
Lue’s decision to pass on the Lakers job ultimately worked in his favor. He joined the Clippers’ organization as an assistant coach under Doc Rivers in the 2019-2020 season and was promoted to head coach the following year. Under his leadership, the Clippers have consistently been contenders in the Western Conference, highlighted by their first-ever trip to the Conference Finals in 2021.
The Lakers, meanwhile, hired Frank Vogel, who led the team to an NBA championship in the 2019-2020 season. However, the franchise has since faced challenges, including roster instability and coaching turnover, with Vogel’s tenure ending in 2022.
Lue’s comments highlight the importance of mutual respect and trust in professional relationships, especially in high-stakes environments like the NBA. His experience also underscores the value of standing firm on principles, even when presented with seemingly golden opportunities.
“Everything happens for a reason,” Lue reflected. “I’m grateful for where I am now and the journey it took to get here. Sometimes, the toughest decisions turn out to be the best ones.”
As the Clippers continue their pursuit of a championship under Lue’s guidance, his story serves as a reminder of the power of self-worth and the importance of finding the right fit, both professionally and personally.
