Dallas Stars sign Alexander Petrovic to a two-year contract as defenseman.
On Friday, Jim Nill, the general manager of the Dallas Stars, announced that the team has signed defenseman Alexander Petrovic to a two-year, two-way contract, effective from the 2024-25 season.
Petrovic has spent the majority of his career in the American Hockey League (AHL). Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, he made his professional debut in March 2012 and has since played 427 AHL games. Over nine seasons, he has represented the San Antonio Rampage, Providence Bruins, Stockton Heat, and Texas Stars, accumulating 151 points (32 goals, 119 assists), 453 penalty minutes, nine game-winning goals, and a plus-37 rating.
During the 2023-24 season, Petrovic tallied 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 70 regular-season AHL games and added one goal in seven Calder Cup Playoff games. Following the AHL season, he joined the Dallas Stars and played in his first Stanley Cup Playoff game since 2016. The 32-year-old proved to be a reliable sixth defenseman in the second round against the Colorado Avalanche, participating in seven games with an average of over 12 minutes of ice time per game and finishing with a plus-1 rating, although he did not record any points.
In the NHL, Petrovic has amassed 50 points (five goals, 45 assists) in 264 regular-season games across nine seasons. He debuted in the NHL with the Florida Panthers in 2013 and spent his first seven seasons with the team. He was traded to the Edmonton Oilers at the 2019 trade deadline for a third-round draft pick and defenseman Chris Wideman, playing nine games with the Oilers. Subsequently, he signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, and Dallas Stars, remaining in the AHL until his call-up to the Stars for one game in the 2023-24 season.
Originally, Petrovic was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the second round (No. 36) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
