Former Penrith Panthers fullback Jarrod Sammut has secured a new contract to continue his rugby league career, despite having last played in the NRL in 2009. This year, Sammut joined Workington Town RLFC in the RFL League One competition and is now set to rejoin the Bradford Bulls on a loan deal until the end of the 2024 season.
During his stint with the Penrith Panthers from 2007 to 2009, Sammut played in 38 games, showcasing his versatility as both a fullback and a halfback. His time in Australia also saw him achieve notable success, including captaining the team to back-to-back Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Finals, with a notable victory against the Parramatta Eels in 2007.
Sammut’s rugby league journey began at the prestigious Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown. At 37 years old, he has amassed over 250 matches overseas, playing for various teams such as the London Broncos, Wigan Warriors, and Leigh Leopards.
Bradford Bulls boss Eamon O’Carroll expressed his satisfaction with securing Sammut, highlighting the club’s long search for a quality halfback. “It’s no secret we have been looking for a quality half now for a number of months, as they are few and far between, so it is hugely satisfying to be able to get one over the line,” O’Carroll stated. He praised Sammut’s excitement about returning to the club and contributing to the team’s efforts for the remainder of the season.
O’Carroll also commended the hard work of the club’s owners and Jason in securing Sammut’s return. “The owners and Jason have worked extremely hard and backed me in trying to bring in someone and we have managed to do that with Jarrod which is fantastic,” he added.
Internationally, Sammut has represented Malta on 17 occasions, scoring 107 points. In a surprising turn, he also played one international rugby union test for Malta in 2008. O’Carroll is particularly impressed with Sammut’s ability to play within a system while also seizing opportunities independently, a quality that he believes will positively influence the team’s dynamic. “I like the fact he can play in a system but also if he sees an opportunity, he will be brave and take it and that can rub off on the players around him with the quality he has,” O’Carroll commented.
O’Carroll also acknowledged the efforts of Jordan Lilley, who has performed admirably but has been somewhat isolated. “Jordan [Lilley] has done fantastic but there’s an element where I feel sorry for him because he’s been on his own, he looks really good when there’s been a settled partner, he gets even better,” O’Carroll remarked. He is confident that Sammut’s arrival will provide much-needed support and elevate the team’s performance.
Sammut’s professionalism, high standards, and extensive knowledge of the game are seen as significant assets for the Bulls. O’Carroll emphasized Sammut’s experience and success at this level, expressing optimism about the fresh energy and perspective he will bring to the group. “He knows what it takes, he will bring a freshness and an energy to our group and I am really looking forward to working with him,” O’Carroll concluded.
In summary, Jarrod Sammut’s return to the Bradford Bulls marks an exciting chapter in his career, with both the player and the club looking forward to a successful collaboration for the remainder of the season.
