Wallabies flyhalf Carter Gordon has announced he will join the NRL’s Gold Coast Titans in 2025.
The Melbourne Rebels’ No. 10, who played eight times for the Wallabies and was selected for the World Cup, has been affected by Rugby Australia’s decision to cut the Rebels, resulting in the sport losing one of its emerging stars.
The uncertainty surrounding contracts for affected Super Rugby players has provided an opening for the NRL to attract talent.
Gordon follows his World Cup teammate, Mark Nawaqanitawase, in switching to rugby league next season.
In a statement, the 23-year-old expressed his enthusiasm for moving to the Gold Coast and taking on the NRL challenge.
“I’m excited about the direction rugby league is heading and the positive atmosphere around the game,” Gordon said.
“At 23, I felt it was the right time to seize this opportunity.
“I understand that this will be a significant challenge.
“I was very impressed with the Titans and their professionalism during our meetings.
“I’ve enjoyed my time in rugby, which has allowed me to represent my country, an experience I will always cherish.”
Titans Coach Des Hasler looks forward to working with Gordon next season.
“Carter has performed well in rugby, representing his country and playing in the World Cup,” Hasler said.
“What stands out is his desire to challenge himself by switching to a new code.
“He’s a skillful player who believes in himself.”
This move further highlights Eddie Jones’ questionable decision to focus on Gordon for the World Cup instead of developing No. 10 Noah Lolesio.
Lolesio signed a one-year extension with the Brumbies earlier and is seen as the favorite to reclaim the No. 10 jersey after being overlooked by Jones.
New coach Joe Schmidt commented on the potential move to the NRL when rumors surfaced earlier this year.
“I spoke with Carter much earlier in the season. Carter is competing for a Wallabies spot, just like several other tens,” Schmidt said.
“There are several tens; Tom Lynagh performed well last week, Ben Donaldson has been doing well, and Noah Lolesio is the most consistent kicker, especially at goal.
“While it’s often reported that players might leave, they more often stay.
“I’d love for Carter to remain and be in the mix for the Wallabies. If not, I’m excited to work with the next candidate we select for that position.”
