Rabbitohs Overwhelm Titans in Thrilling High-Scoring Game at Robina Stadium
Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell starred for the Rabbitohs, with Walker scoring twice and assisting another, while Mitchell added a try and provided three assists.
The Rabbitohs had a rapid start, notching two tries within the first 12 minutes to take a 10-0 lead.
The Red and Green’s opening try featured Damien Cook showcasing his speed, outpacing the Titans’ marker defenders. Cook, after breaking through the defense, expertly drew in the last defender, Keano Kini, before passing to Mitchell, who crossed the line for the Rabbitohs’ first points.
Next to score for Souths was Jacob Gagai, who benefited from a sublime left-to-right cut-out pass from Walker, extending their lead.
The Titans responded with a try from Afolonia Khan-Pereira, whose speed outmatched the Rabbitohs’ right edge defenders. However, this wasn’t enough to shift the game’s momentum.
The Rabbitohs closed the first half with two more tries, further asserting their dominance. Richie Kennar exploited a wide gap in the defense, created by Mitchell’s clever play, to score effortlessly.
Mitchell was pivotal again for the last try of the half, launching a towering bomb that forced a knock-on from Khan-Pereira. Walker capitalized on the loose ball, scoring to give Souths a commanding 22-6 lead at halftime.
The second half began with a statement from the Rabbitohs. A line break by Gagai, who fended off Khan-Pereira, indicated Souths’ intent. Although they didn’t score immediately, it foreshadowed more points to come.
In the 50th minute, Michael Chee Kam appeared to have scored after gathering a loose ball from another Mitchell bomb. However, the try was overturned due to a knock-on by Gagai in the build-up.
Undeterred, Souths scored five minutes later when Thomas Burgess powered over the line, latching onto a well-timed pass from Mitchell at dummy half.
Davvy Moale then solidified the Rabbitohs’ lead, bulldozing through Gold Coast defenders to score near the line.
The Titans managed a consolation try from David Fifita, who broke through Walker’s tackle to score.
The Rabbitohs finished strongly, adding two more tries in the final ten minutes through Jack Wighton and Walker, sealing Souths’ victory and marking their first back-to-back wins of the season.
