Honiton Golf Club recently hosted a well-attended event where 84 lady golfers from various clubs across Devon and Somerset competed on the meticulously maintained course. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the participants were met with a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The team event featured a waltz format and saw winners from both home and away teams. The Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club took the top spot among the away teams. The home team winners included Barbara Cummings, Jo Donmall, and Cathy Uttley. Additionally, other prize-winning teams hailed from Teign Valley, Stover, Ilfracombe, and Lyme Regis.
This competition was a significant occasion for the lady golfers and included contributions from the senior men of the club, who helped as starters and spotters on the course. Adding to the welcoming atmosphere, volunteer ladies managed the Halfway House, where they served homemade cakes and refreshments at the 11th tee.
In parallel, Honiton’s mixed players competed in a closely contested Fun Betterball competition. Mick Swann and Linda Curtis clinched victory with 47 points, thanks to an impressive 27 points on the back 9, narrowly beating Joan Smith and Frank Penny, who also scored 47 points. Tracey Smith and Phil Wall secured third place, trailing by just two points.
In the Men’s section, Peter Wainwright and Matt Young emerged victorious with a 4/3 win over Paul Stewart and Rob Southall-Brown in a winter competition held under foggy and rainy July conditions, reminiscent of November weather. The Men’s teams had mixed results throughout the week, with the Dartmoor League team achieving a 3-2 victory against Fingle Glen.
Looking ahead, the Ladies section is eagerly anticipating their final Open of the year, scheduled for September 4. This event is part of the club’s Festival Week, which will also feature Men’s and Mixed Opens and a Pro-Am event. Given the club’s vibrant and welcoming spirit, the upcoming events promise to be successful and enjoyable occasions for all involved.
