The Cleveland Browns not only ranked highly in numerous defensive categories in the NFL during the 2023 season, but they also witnessed a breakout performance from one of their young stars. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (JOK) had a career-best season, amassing 101 tackles, including 20 tackles for loss. He also recorded 3.5 sacks, broke up six passes, and made two interceptions over 16 games.
Reflecting on his standout season, Owusu-Koramoah views it as a step in his ongoing development. “Each year is a progression,” he stated after a recent practice. “With more experience, meeting new coaches and players, there’s always something to learn from and grow. Every day, we grow a little bit, and the more effort you put in, the more you’ll grow.”
Part of JOK’s growth involved deepening his understanding of the game. “I don’t see it as the game slowing down,” he explained. “It’s more about better understanding the positions around you, your own role, and offensive strategies. This increased knowledge enhances your game IQ.”
Despite his impressive instincts on the field, Owusu-Koramoah attributes his success to a combination of factors. “It’s about preparation, coaching, teammates like A-Walk guiding me, and even the support staff like janitors who contribute to the team’s success. It’s a collective effort.”
While JOK had a breakout season in 2023, he doesn’t believe he’s reached his peak yet. “It’s nice to get recognition, like the Pro Bowl, but there’s always a higher level to aim for. I’m not satisfied yet; there’s still much to achieve in terms of tackles, TFLs, and interceptions. With teammates like Dalvin Tomlinson in front of me, it’s challenging but I’m determined to improve.”
At 24, JOK maintains that there is always room for growth and learning. “Wise people often say, ‘I know nothing.’ The more knowledge you gain, the more humble you become, realizing there’s always more to learn. I’m still a student, eager to progress in my knowledge and skills.”
Head coach Kevin Stefanski praised JOK’s fit in defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s system. “Jeremiah’s ability to run, hit, and make plays all over the field has only improved since his rookie year. His physical gifts have always been there, but his understanding of the game has grown, thanks in part to his work with coach Jason Tarver.”
Defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, who has helped free up JOK to make plays, believes the young linebacker is just beginning to show his potential. “He’s explosive and a playmaker. He started to shine last year, and I think he’ll continue to grow. His offseason development and last year’s experience are making him a formidable player.”
As JOK enters the final year of his rookie contract, he remains unfazed about the prospect of an extension. “My agents handle that. If negotiations come up, they’ll inform me. For now, my focus is on football.”
He emphasized the importance of separating the business side from the playing side. “It’s about compartmentalization. There’s a time for business and a time to focus on football.”
Looking ahead, JOK is enthusiastic about building on last season’s success. “When a team has success, it builds a culture. With that culture in place, new players can step in and continue to build on it. We have the same culture, attitude, and principles, which allows us to keep moving forward.”
He believes the defense can improve in their second year under the current system. “It’s about identifying and correcting our mistakes. It doesn’t have to be complicated. We need to focus on fixing what we didn’t do well.”
The Browns’ 2023 season ended with a heavy playoff defeat to the Texans. Schwartz mentioned during OTAs that this loss would serve as motivation for 2024. When asked about the defensive players’ feelings after the loss, JOK responded, “It wasn’t a good feeling. Losing is never acceptable. It motivates us to come back stronger.”
Overall, JOK’s journey reflects his dedication to continuous improvement, learning, and contributing to the team’s success. As he and the Browns prepare for the 2024 season, the young linebacker remains focused on reaching new heights and solidifying his place as a key player in the NFL.
