Club chief discusses Leeds United target; Celtic’s Adam Idah transfer update given.
As the football season approaches, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United are gearing up for next season, with numerous clubs across the country resuming pre-season training this week. The Owls have been proactive in the summer transfer window, and the Blades are expected to follow suit with potential new signings being discussed.
Chris Wilder, manager of Sheffield United, is aware that departures will be necessary before significant new signings can be made. However, free transfers are still an option, a strategy Sheffield Wednesday has already capitalized on. As the clubs prepare for the new season, we have compiled the latest updates on other Championship teams.
Celtic continues to pursue Norwich City’s Adam Idah after his successful loan spell with the club, although the deal is not imminent. Celtic’s chief, John Kennedy, explained to Sky Sports: “There are many ongoing discussions. This period has seen many players on holiday, and various things have been happening. We hope that as pre-season progresses, some of these discussions will lead to concrete results. There is a lot of work behind the scenes, and we expect to see some developments in the coming weeks.”
New Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup has expressed his intention to evaluate Idah before making any decisions about the player’s future. Thorup praised Idah, stating, “He’s an exciting player with significant potential. Being a local lad who has been with the club for many years, he has demonstrated his ability to influence games with his speed and movement in critical areas. It would be unwise not to give him a thorough assessment.”
Meanwhile, Leeds United is reportedly interested in Fluminense star Jhon Arias as they brace for the possible departure of one or more of their key wingers this summer. Fluminense’s chief, Mario Bittencourt, commented on the situation, acknowledging the uncertainty around whether Arias will stay or leave.
In other Championship news, QPR has been unable to reach an agreement with veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who will now leave the club as a free agent. Begovic, a former Chelsea goalkeeper, played one season with QPR, making 46 appearances and helping the team avoid relegation. At 37, it is unclear if Begovic will continue his playing career, but given his experience, he is expected to attract interest from other clubs.
QPR CEO Christian Nourry expressed his gratitude for Begovic’s contributions, saying, “On behalf of the entire club, I extend my deep thanks to Asmir for his significant contributions. His exceptional leadership qualities were invaluable during challenging times. I have great respect for Asmir both as a person and as a professional, and I wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
