The New York Rangers are in need of an offensive boost in their top six lineup and are likely to target a veteran goal-scorer during the offseason. However, due to limited salary cap space, General Manager Chris Drury might instead rely on an emerging young talent to step into a more prominent role for the upcoming season.
Could Brennan Othmann be the answer for a top-six position next season?
Brennan Othmann stands out as one of the most promising prospects within the Rangers’ system. The 2021 first-round draft pick had a brief stint in the NHL this season but primarily showcased his skills with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Othmann accumulated an impressive 49 points (21 goals and 28 assists) over 67 games in the AHL this season. Although he played only three NHL games during the regular season, he averaged 9:05 of ice time per game and managed to take six shots on goal, despite not scoring any points.
The 21-year-old, standing at 6 feet and weighing 186 pounds, hails from Ontario, Canada. This past season in the AHL has been crucial for his development, and he appears poised to make the leap to the NHL in 2024.
Should he secure a spot on the first line as the right wing, Othmann, at just 22 years old, could inject much-needed energy into the Rangers’ top six. He would likely join veterans Chris Kreider (33) and Mika Zibanejad (31) on the first line. The top six also includes Artemi Panarin (32) and Vincent Trocheck (30). Alexis Lafrenière, at 22 years old, is the only other player in the top six under 30. The strategy of blending youthful energy with experienced players has proven effective with Lafrenière and the second line, suggesting that Othmann could bring a similar dynamic.
While the Rangers are more inclined to pursue a seasoned player for their top six, financial constraints might make Othmann an unexpected but viable option.
