Kamilla Cardoso has a history of playing crucial roles in high-level basketball teams. She was a key player in the South Carolina women’s basketball team’s undefeated season and national championship win during the 2023-24 season. Now, as a rookie for the Chicago Sky in the WNBA, she continues to make a significant impact. Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon highlighted Cardoso’s contribution with one crucial word: “Presence.”
Following the Sky’s 93-85 victory over the Las Vegas Aces on July 16, Weatherspoon praised Cardoso’s presence on the court. She emphasized how Cardoso excels in rebounding, defending, and initiating transitions. Weatherspoon noted Cardoso’s confidence and resilience, stating that she never shows disappointment and consistently plays hard. With each game, Cardoso gains more experience, which benefits both her and the team.
In the first 18 games of the season, Cardoso averages 8.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. At 6-foot-7, her defensive presence is formidable, deterring guards from driving into the paint. Her ability to make crucial blocks is noteworthy, and her timing is expected to improve with more experience.
The Chicago Sky hopes Cardoso will develop into one of the top two-way interior players in the WNBA, similar to her role with the South Carolina team. However, Weatherspoon has identified areas for improvement, particularly on offense. Before the Sky’s 71-84 loss to the Seattle Storm on July 7, Weatherspoon pointed out that Cardoso needs to focus on finishing her shots, getting into the right positions, and using her strength and power under the basket. Improving her efficiency is critical, as she currently shoots 46.2 percent from the field.
During a recent game against the New York Liberty, Cardoso faced challenges against former All-Star Jonquel Jones, going 3-for-8 from the field. Despite the difficulty of her rim attempts, improving her shooting accuracy can be the difference between winning and losing. Cardoso is still at the beginning of her professional journey, and as she gains more experience, her impact is expected to grow significantly.
Weatherspoon believes that Cardoso’s improved efficiency will greatly benefit the team. Dominating the paint will open up more opportunities for the Sky, making Cardoso’s presence even more crucial. As she continues to develop, her role in the Chicago Sky’s success will become increasingly significant.
