Kate Martin recently discussed the intense pressures her former Iowa teammate, Caitlin Clark, faces during her rookie season with the Indiana Fever. Martin emphasized the unrealistic expectations placed on Clark and the challenges accompanying her increasing fame.
“People expect perfection from her, which is unrealistic,” Martin shared in an interview with Paloma Villicana of Fox 5 News Las Vegas. “All I can do is be a friend, listen, and support her. Caitlin’s having an outstanding rookie season; she’s a phenomenal player.”
As a rookie herself with the Las Vegas Aces, Martin has played in 13 games this season, averaging four points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Her experience with Clark during their time at Iowa has given her insight into the scrutiny Clark now faces in the WNBA.
“Caitlin is one of my best friends. My role is to be there for her,” Martin added.
Clark, who is averaging 16.3 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game, has become a focal point in the WNBA this season. The intense interest in her performance comes with high expectations and significant responsibility. Despite the Indiana Fever’s struggles, including a narrow 88-87 loss to the Chicago Sky, Clark’s impact on the court and within the league is clear.
During their college years at Iowa, Martin and her teammates played a crucial role in supporting Clark both on and off the court. Their dynamic highlighted the robust support system that helped Clark handle the pressures of stardom.
“Everyone thinks they want to be Caitlin, but they don’t realize how heavy her crown is,” Martin once remarked in an ESPN interview with Wright Thompson.
Clark’s teammates, often referred to as her tribe, were pivotal in her journey, bearing witness to the emotional challenges of her rising fame. Former Iowa women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder noted that Clark thrived with strong, vocal teammates who maintained a cohesive and supportive team environment.
“She prefers strong leaders who will use their voice,” Bluder commented.
Despite the immense pressure Clark faced, her teammates remained united. Their solidarity was particularly evident following a chaotic court-storming incident after Iowa’s game against Ohio State in January, where Clark’s teammates quickly rallied around her.
“I saw Caitlin on the ground and just started seeing red,” Martin recalled. “I’m ride or die for my ladies.”
This camaraderie and mutual support were vital during Clark’s college career and continue to be essential as she navigates the professional basketball world. The bond between Clark and her former teammates, especially Martin, underscores the importance of friendship and support in overcoming the pressures of high expectations and growing fame.
Martin’s perspective sheds light on the often-overlooked emotional and psychological challenges faced by star athletes. As Clark continues to make her mark in the WNBA, the support from friends like Martin remains crucial in helping her manage the expectations and responsibilities that come with being a standout player.
