In a strategic move to bolster their roster, the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team has secured a commitment from Ta’Niya Latson, the nation’s leading scorer from Florida State. Latson, who averaged 25.2 points per game last season, entered the transfer portal following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season and has chosen to join head coach Dawn Staley’s program for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Latson’s arrival comes at a pivotal time for South Carolina, as the team aims to reclaim its dominance after a runner-up finish in the national championship game against the University of Connecticut. Her scoring prowess is expected to complement the Gamecocks’ existing talent, including standout freshman Joyce Edwards, who led the team in scoring during her debut season.
Coach Staley has been proactive in the transfer market, previously adding top junior college player Sakima Walker and former Oregon guard Te-Hina Paopao to the roster. Walker, a 6-foot-5 forward, was named the NJCAA Division I women’s player of the year after averaging 16.7 points and 8.2 rebounds, while Paopao brings valuable experience and three-point shooting ability, having been recognized as a top transfer by ESPN.
Latson’s decision to join South Carolina underscores the program’s appeal and its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in women’s college basketball. Her dynamic scoring ability is anticipated to make an immediate impact, as the Gamecocks strive for another deep postseason run in the 2025-26 season.
