Problems are escalating for the Parramatta Eels as forward Charlie Guymer has requested permission to leave the club. If Guymer’s request is granted, he would join other young talents such as Blaize Talagi, who is likely heading to the Panthers, Matt Arthur, who has yet to find a new club, and Ethan Sanders, who is set to join the Canberra Raiders next year.
Guymer, considered one of the best young forwards in the game, had signed a new and improved contract with the Eels earlier this year. This contract was supposed to keep him with the team until at least the end of the 2026 NRL season, with next year seeing him on the development list and 2026 moving him to the Top 30. His earnings were set at $80,000 as a development player and $140,000 in his first season as a Top 30 member.
On Thursday, News Corp reported that Guymer had requested a release through his management. However, the Eels responded quickly, stating that Guymer would remain with the club until the end of 2026. The club’s statement read, “His management approached the Club last week seeking permission to negotiate with other Clubs. This request was denied and the Club has a strong commitment to Charlie’s future.” The club also mentioned that they have been in regular contact with Guymer, including a conversation that afternoon, and he assured them of his unchanged commitment to the Parramatta Eels.
CEO Jim Sarantino expressed his disappointment over the public nature of the situation, especially as Guymer is recovering from surgery. Sarantino stated, “It’s disappointing that Charlie has been dragged into this publicly especially as he is recovering after surgery on Monday. We have spoken to him this afternoon and he has confirmed his commitment to the Club and reiterated his excitement in being a part of the Club’s future.”
Guymer, a forward with significant potential, reportedly asked for a release after up to six clubs contacted his manager, Anthony Field, following his NRL debut. Field mentioned that it was former coach Brad Arthur who convinced Guymer to re-sign, and that six clubs reached out after Guymer’s debut. Field said, “It was Brad Arthur who convinced him to sign for two more years. Brad sold him the vision but it’s changed now. This isn’t about Jason Ryles because they’ve had a good meeting.”
It’s believed that Guymer is upset over the departures of Matt Arthur, Talagi, and Sanders. This situation has added to the concerns surrounding Parramatta’s decision to part ways with the former coach. Matt Arthur, Brad Arthur’s son, was released on compassionate grounds, believed to be related to his father’s treatment by the club. Additionally, next year’s star recruit, Zac Lomax, wanted a clause tied to Arthur in his contract with the club, but this request was denied.
