Former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Chandler Jones has a chance to avoid a jail sentence related to a domestic violence case. The Raiders released Jones in September following his arrest.
According to Las Vegas Justice Court records, Jones received a suspended 90-day jail sentence on June 17. This arrangement allows him to avoid jail time if he stays out of trouble and avoids contact with his victim, except under Family Court orders. Jones entered a no contest plea, leading to the dismissal of one domestic violence charge, as per court records.
Before receiving the interim sentence, Jones’s nolo contendere (no contest) plea resulted in one domestic violence charge being dismissed. The second charge will be dismissed if Jones remains out of trouble until December 17.
The charges against Jones stem from his September arrest. The Metropolitan Police Department reported that he violated a temporary protection order from the mother of his son. According to the police report, Jones got naked and burned the woman’s belongings, including a recycling bin, pool net, and dog toys, which he took from her backyard.
Chandler Jones’s Career and Recent Struggles
Jones began his NFL career in 2012 and quickly became one of the league’s top defenders. In 2019, he had a standout season with 19 sacks, 53 tackles, and a league-leading eight forced fumbles.
However, an injury shortened his 2020 season, limiting him to just five games. Despite this setback, he recorded 10.5 sacks in 2021, maintaining his status as one of the premier pass rushers. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler ranked him as the fifth-best edge rusher heading into the 2021 season.
Jones was a top contender for the AP Defensive Player of the Year award, finishing second in 2019 and third in 2017. In 2022, he continued his strong performance with 10.5 sacks, 26 quarterback hits, and 41 tackles, including 12 for loss.
In 2022, Jones signed with the Raiders. He told @Schultz_Report, “I thought, ‘okay, here’s an opportunity to play with a young superstar in Maxx Crosby.’ I thought that would be really special. He’s a transcendent young player and I think pairing up with him would make it very difficult for teams to game plan us.”
Unfortunately, his time with the Raiders did not meet expectations. Jones managed only 4.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits over 15 games. He did not play in 2023 before being released.
