Taulia Tagovailoa, the former standout quarterback for Maryland, has signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL), as announced by the team on Monday.
Despite his impressive collegiate career, Tagovailoa went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. He is noted for being one of the most accomplished passers in Big Ten history, setting a conference record with 11,256 career passing yards. During the 2023 season, he earned a spot on the second team All-Big Ten by leading the conference in several categories, including passing yards (3,377), passing touchdowns (25), completions (290), and points responsible for (182).
Following the NFL Draft, Tagovailoa participated in minicamps with both the Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks but did not secure a position on their rosters.
Tagovailoa will be working under head coach Scott Milanovich in Hamilton, a fellow former Maryland quarterback. Milanovich, who also had an illustrious career at Maryland, is second in the program’s history with 7,301 passing yards.
Tagovailoa, who stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 200 pounds, transferred to Maryland after spending his freshman year at Alabama. Throughout his time with the Terrapins, he amassed 11,256 passing yards, 76 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions, while also rushing for 13 touchdowns over four seasons.
In January, Tagovailoa entered the transfer portal and sought a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA, but his waiver request was denied.
In other news concerning Maryland alumni, four former Terrapins have been selected for the U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team. Additionally, Houston Texans’ star wide receiver and former Terp Stefon Diggs conducted a football clinic at SECU Stadium.
Tagovailoa’s journey to professional football now continues in Canada, where he hopes to make a significant impact with the Tiger-Cats. This opportunity allows him to showcase his talents on a new stage after an outstanding collegiate career.
