Today, it seems that Alabama is developing another potent duo in Jam Miller and Justice Haynes. Both Miller and Haynes delivered explosive plays, with Miller scoring on a 35-yard run and Haynes breaking away for an 85-yard touchdown. While this sample size is small, their ability to produce big plays on limited touches demonstrates the potential of this new tandem.
On Wednesday, Alabama’s running backs coach, Robert Gillespie, addressed the performance of his unit during the game against Western Kentucky. Gillespie was pleased with their overall effort, noting that the running backs “made the most of the opportunity” not only in rushing but also in their blocking responsibilities. However, despite their strong start, Gillespie emphasized that splitting snaps between Miller and Haynes isn’t a rigid plan moving forward.
According to Gillespie, the decision on who plays more isn’t about who starts the game or takes the first snap. Instead, it’s based on performance during the game. Whoever gets into a rhythm and is consistently making plays will see more action. He stressed that it’s about having depth in the running back room and being ready to adjust based on game situations. The focus is on winning, not on ensuring equal playing time, and this depth is a key element in Alabama’s long-standing success. Gillespie believes in letting players who are “hot” stay on the field, and the decision will always be about what’s best for the team at the moment.

Gillespie stated that in some situations, pounding the ball for 3-4 yards is crucial, and Alabama running backs must be ready for these tough, physical gains. Gillespie highlighted that Miller and Haynes both possess the speed to break big plays, but they also showed toughness in short-yardage situations.
