Former Kansas Jayhawks defensive end Lonnie Phelps was involved in a serious incident leading to his arrest and subsequent release from the Cleveland Browns. On Wednesday night, Phelps allegedly drove his SUV into the Red Shoe Island Bistro in Key West, Florida, resulting in charges of drunken driving and property damage, as reported by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. This incident prompted the Browns to waive him from their roster on Thursday afternoon.
Cleveland.com detailed the incident, noting that Phelps refused to take a breathalyzer test. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the restaurant’s owner, Joseph Schroeder, estimated the damage to be around $300,000. Schroeder expressed relief that the restaurant’s outdoor lounge was closed at the time, as the crash could have resulted in severe injuries or fatalities had it been occupied.
The police report revealed that Phelps had a female passenger with him during the incident, and both appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. At one point, Phelps reportedly turned away from officers, fearing he might be shot. Phelps had a notable season at Kansas in 2022, leading the team with seven sacks, which earned him a spot with the Browns as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. However, he did not participate in any games last season, remaining on the practice squad.
Further details from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office inmate report indicated that Phelps, 23, was booked at approximately 9:45 p.m. on June 19. He faces a single charge of DUI damage to property and is being held without bond. The Key West Police Department’s report corroborated that Phelps had crashed into the restaurant and exhibited signs of alcohol consumption, refusing multiple breath tests.
Additionally, the report mentioned that Phelps had a female passenger who also seemed intoxicated. Witnesses observed the two arguing in the street following the crash. During the police observation, Phelps urinated on himself, further indicating his impaired state. The Browns made their decision to waive Phelps public around 3 p.m. on Thursday.
Phelps’ journey to the NFL saw him signing with the Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2023 after a standout year at the University of Kansas. Despite being re-signed to a reserve/futures contract at the end of the last season, he did not make an appearance in any official games for the team. A hearing concerning his charges has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on July 2.
This incident marks a significant downturn in Phelps’ professional career, highlighting the severe consequences of his actions both legally and professionally. The Browns’ swift action to release him underscores the NFL’s strict stance on personal conduct and legal issues involving players.
