Ben Hemmerling Eyes Professional Hockey Career Following Junior Success**
For Ben Hemmerling, being drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights marked the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream. Like many young hockey players, Hemmerling had always hoped to reach the pinnacle of the sport, though he wasn’t certain he would be selected by an NHL team. However, when the Golden Knights called his name, the young winger from Sherwood Park, Alberta, knew his years of dedication and hard work had paid off.
Reflecting on the moment, Hemmerling shared, “It was one of the best moments of my life. Leading up to it, I was nervous because I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted. Seeing my name on that draft board was incredibly special, a day I’ll never forget.”
Hemmerling’s journey to being drafted began in his hometown near Edmonton. His development accelerated when he joined an academy to hone his skills. Selected by the Everett Silvertips in the third round of the 2019 Western Hockey League (WHL) bantam draft, he entered one of the premier developmental leagues at the age of 16.
“I’ve been really fortunate to have great coaches and strong support from my family,” Hemmerling said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without my family, coaches, friends, and the relationships I’ve built along the way.”
The 2022 sixth-round pick (177th overall) credits much of his growth to the coaching he received, particularly from longtime Silvertips coach Dennis Williams. Under Williams’ guidance, Hemmerling developed into a prolific scorer and a leader, earning every opportunity through relentless effort.
“Coach Williams is someone you have to earn everything with, and I really respect that,” Hemmerling remarked. “He pushed me to get the best out of myself. He’s not just a great coach but also a great mentor and friend. Everything about him is first class.”
In addition to his coaches, Hemmerling also attributes his success to lifelong friends, particularly Jordan Gustafsson, a fellow Vegas Golden Knights prospect. Their bond began in childhood, playing in the same local hockey programs in Strathcona County, Alberta.
“Jordan and I have known each other since we were four or five years old and played together in minor hockey league,” Hemmerling said. “We’re very close; we train together in the summers. I’m excited to see what we can achieve on the ice together.”
Hemmerling and Gustafsson have followed similar paths from young hockey enthusiasts to NHL prospects, now pursuing their dreams within the same organization. Hemmerling values the support of friends like Gustafsson, recognizing the importance of camaraderie during the mentally taxing hockey season.
This support system was instrumental during Hemmerling’s breakout 2023-24 season. Leading Everett with 91 points (30 goals, 61 assists) in 65 games, Hemmerling helped the Silvertips secure a fourth-place finish in the WHL’s Western Conference and earned the team’s MVP award.
“I felt more confident this year, more of a driver than a complementary player,” Hemmerling said. “I took charge on the ice, becoming a significant threat with the puck. I like to shoot and make plays, and this season really showcased that.”
Beyond his scoring ability, Hemmerling’s leadership qualities stood out. Named team captain alongside his friend Austin Roest, he embraced the role with enthusiasm.
“Being part of that leadership group was special,” Hemmerling said. “I see myself as a glue guy—vocal, energetic, and able to keep things light while also knowing when to focus. It’s important to balance fun and intensity.”
Hemmerling’s leadership extended beyond the ice, fostering a positive locker room atmosphere that contributed to the team’s success and their 2024 WHL Playoff appearance.
Another milestone in Hemmerling’s career came in November 2023 when he signed his entry-level contract with the Golden Knights. This marked the official start of his journey to becoming a professional hockey player, allowing him to focus on further developing his game.
“Signing my first NHL contract was an unreal experience,” Hemmerling said. “I’ll never forget the day I signed it with my family and coach present. I’m incredibly grateful.”
As Hemmerling transitions from junior to professional hockey, his goals are clear. “I want to get bigger, stronger, and faster,” he said. “It’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s about growing my game as much as I can and earning a spot at the pro level next year.”
With his junior career behind him, Hemmerling’s focus is now on making an impact in professional hockey. His journey, marked by dedication, support from coaches, family, and friends, and a relentless drive to improve, has prepared him for the next big step. As he sets his sights on the professional ranks, Hemmerling remains committed to the hard work and determination that have brought him this far.
