Pompey striker Tayo Singerr set to undergo hamstring surgery after latest injury setback

 

Portsmouth youngster Tayo Singerr has suffered another frustrating injury setback and is now expected to undergo surgery on his hamstring, manager John Mousinho has confirmed.

 

The highly regarded 18-year-old forward recently returned to Portsmouth from AFC Totton after suffering an injury just nine minutes into his debut for the National League South side. The setback represents another difficult moment for Singerr, who had only recently recovered from a separate hamstring problem.

 

Singerr joined AFC Totton earlier this month on a season-long loan as Portsmouth looked to give the academy graduate valuable first-team experience. However, his spell with the Stags has been severely disrupted almost immediately by the latest injury.

 

The young striker had already endured a difficult period during pre-season at Fratton Park. He was unable to feature throughout Portsmouth’s pre-season programme after suffering a setback during his short loan spell with Gosport Borough towards the end of the previous campaign.

 

Despite that issue, Singerr was included on the bench for Totton’s away fixture against Weston-Super-Mare, shortly after his loan move from Portsmouth had been officially announced. He was eventually introduced from the bench 12 minutes into the second half, with Totton already trailing 3-0.

 

Unfortunately, his involvement lasted only a short time. Singerr was forced to leave the pitch after experiencing another hamstring problem, eventually being withdrawn in the 66th minute.

 

His absence continued into Totton’s following fixture against Slough, where manager Scott Rendell named a 16-man squad without the Portsmouth loanee. Rendell subsequently explained that Singerr’s omission was directly related to the injury he had suffered on his debut.

 

At the time, the Totton boss stressed that the latest problem was not connected to Singerr’s previous hamstring injury. He explained that the teenager had felt something during the match and that, given his previous experience with a serious injury, there was understandably an element of concern surrounding the situation.

 

Rendell also admitted that the club would have to wait for Portsmouth’s medical team to assess the player before the severity of the injury could be established.

 

However, Singerr has since returned to Fratton Park to receive further treatment and assessment. Speaking during Portsmouth’s pre-match press conference ahead of their meeting with Blackburn Rovers, Mousinho confirmed that the teenager will require hamstring surgery.

 

The development comes as another major setback for a player who had been hoping to use his loan move to continue his development and establish himself further up the English football pyramid.

 

Singerr’s rapid rise at Portsmouth

 

Singerr’s latest injury is particularly disappointing given the rapid progress he had made since breaking into Portsmouth’s senior setup.

 

The striker first made his senior debut for Pompey in August 2025, when he came off the bench against Reading in the Carabao Cup. Despite being just 17 years and 10 months old at the time, Singerr immediately made an impression by scoring on his debut.

 

He subsequently spent the first half of the season on loan with Moneyfields in the Isthmian League South Central Division. His performances there highlighted his goalscoring potential, with the young forward finding the net 14 times in just 18 appearances.

 

Those impressive performances led Portsmouth to recall him in January as the club dealt with a number of injury problems.

 

Singerr was then handed his Championship debut on New Year’s Day against Bristol City. He came on as a substitute and played the final 16 minutes of the match, giving him his first taste of regular senior football at Portsmouth’s level.

 

His progress was recognised by the club later that month when he signed his first professional contract with Pompey. His emergence also saw him included in match-day squads for subsequent Championship fixtures against Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic.

 

The second half of the campaign saw Singerr move to Gosport Borough in search of further first-team opportunities. It was during that spell that he suffered the hamstring problem that subsequently affected his preparations for the new season.

 

Following his time at Gosport, Portsmouth manager John Mousinho indicated that the club wanted to find Singerr another opportunity to continue his development at a higher level of the football pyramid.

 

That opportunity eventually arrived with AFC Totton, but the teenager’s latest injury means his progress has once again been interrupted.

 

Singerr will now focus on recovering from surgery and returning to full fitness. For a young player who has already demonstrated his goalscoring ability and potential at several levels, the immediate priority will be completing his rehabilitation successfully before attempting to resume his development on the pitch.

 

The latest setback will undoubtedly be frustrating for both the player and Portsmouth, particularly given how quickly Singerr had begun to establish himself as one of the club’s promising young attacking prospects.
