£3m Millwall Star Sends Message to Fans After Frustrating Injury Setback Confirmed by Alex Neil
Mathis Servais has broken his silence after Millwall manager Alex Neil confirmed another frustrating injury setback for the summer signing, leaving the young midfielder facing yet more time away from first-team action.
The 21-year-old Belgian only recently made his long-awaited debut for the Lions, featuring in Millwall’s entertaining 2-2 draw with West Ham United just before the international break.
Servais arrived at The Den from Belgian club KV Mechelen during the summer in a transfer reportedly worth around £3 million. However, his introduction to English football was delayed after an injury ruled him out of the opening weeks of the campaign.
After finally recovering, Servais was able to make his first appearance for Millwall on September 19, when he came off the bench during the closing stages against West Ham.
It was supposed to be the beginning of an important period for the versatile midfielder as he looked to establish himself in Neil’s plans. Instead, another fitness problem has now interrupted his progress.
Neil has confirmed that Servais picked up an issue during the week, although the precise severity of the latest injury and the length of his expected absence remain unclear.
The setback is particularly frustrating because a hamstring problem had already kept the Belgian sidelined at the start of the season. Having finally returned to the squad and made his debut, he now faces another spell on the sidelines.
For Millwall, it is another unwanted addition to an injury list that has already created plenty of headaches for Neil.
Servais sends a message to Millwall supporters
Servais has acknowledged his latest setback through social media, admitting that he is extremely disappointed to find himself dealing with another injury so soon after finally getting onto the pitch.
However, rather than allowing the frustration to take over, the youngster has promised to use the setback as motivation to return stronger and better.
Writing on Instagram, Servais said:
«“Extremely disappointed with this new setback, but I’ll work harder than ever to come back stronger and at my best level.”»
The message should provide some encouragement for Millwall supporters, who will now be hoping the midfielder can recover quickly and finally begin to show why the club invested around £3 million in his services.
Servais joined Millwall after an impressive campaign with Mechelen. During his season with the Belgian side, he made 32 appearances in the Pro League, contributing two goals and four assists.
His performances helped Mechelen secure a sixth-place finish, with his versatility and ability to contribute in different areas of midfield making him an attractive option for Millwall.
The move to the Championship represented an important step forward in his career, but his first few months in England have unfortunately been dominated by fitness problems rather than football.
Another headache for Alex Neil
Neil will understandably be hoping Servais’ latest problem is nothing serious and that the midfielder can return to training sooner rather than later.
Millwall already had several players unavailable around the time of the West Ham fixture, although some players did manage to return to the matchday squad before the international break.
Servais was one of those involved, coming off the bench, while Luke Cundle, Alfie Doughty and Kyrell Lisbie were also available for selection.
The West Ham game itself demonstrated Millwall’s attacking potential. The Lions built a 2-0 advantage and appeared to be heading towards an impressive victory before the visitors fought back.
Mohamadou Kanté and Konstantinos Mavropanos eventually found the net for West Ham, ensuring the points were shared at The Den.
Millwall created plenty of opportunities during the contest, recording 19 shots, including seven on target, while registering an expected-goals figure of 2.68. They also recorded 34 touches inside the opposition penalty area and created five big chances.
Despite those encouraging attacking numbers, the final result will have left Neil frustrated, particularly after his side had established such a strong position in the game.
Millwall still dealing with significant injury problems
The Lions’ injury situation remains a major concern as they prepare for their next Championship assignment against Preston North End.
Several players are still expected to be unavailable, with Lukas Jensen, Josh Coburn, Mihailo Ivanovic and Romain Esse among those facing time on the sidelines.
Servais’ latest injury therefore comes at an unfortunate moment for both the player and the club.
Millwall need as many players as possible available as they look to maintain their promotion ambitions, and having a £3 million signing sitting on the sidelines is far from ideal.
For Neil, the hope will be that Servais’ latest problem proves to be a minor one and that he can soon return to the group.
Servais desperately needs a clear run of fitness
From the player’s perspective, the timing of this setback could hardly be more frustrating.
Missing the opening seven league matches of the season was already a disappointing introduction to life at Millwall. After completing his recovery and finally getting an opportunity against West Ham, Servais would have been hoping to use the international break to build his fitness, work with his teammates and push for a greater role in Neil’s starting XI.
Instead, another injury has interrupted that momentum.
The debut itself offered a glimpse of what Servais could potentially bring to the team, but he now needs a sustained period of fitness if he is to properly establish himself at The Den.
At just 21, there is still plenty of time for the Belgian to turn things around. However, the longer these injury problems continue, the more difficult it becomes for him to build rhythm, earn the manager’s trust and compete for a regular starting position.
Millwall will also be hoping their £3 million investment eventually produces the return they envisioned when they brought him over from Mechelen.
For now, though, Servais can only focus on his recovery.
His message to supporters suggests that he is determined to respond positively, and Millwall fans will certainly hope that his next appearance is the beginning of a much more settled chapter in his career at The Den.
