Fulham Signing David Affengruber Reveals ‘Indescribable’ Feeling After Dream Premier League Start
Fulham summer recruit David Affengruber has described his move to the Premier League as a dream come true, admitting that the speed at which his career has progressed in 2026 has left him amazed.
The Austrian centre-back completed a deadline-day switch to Craven Cottage during the summer transfer window, joining Fulham in a reported €12 million deal. His arrival was viewed as an important addition to Alvaro Arbeloa’s defensive options as the club prepared for another demanding Premier League campaign.
Despite arriving only recently, Affengruber has wasted little time making an impression. The defender has quickly found himself involved in Fulham’s first-team plans and was handed starts against two of the biggest names in English football, Liverpool and Manchester United, before the international break.
Ordinarily, a player moving from La Liga to the Premier League would be expected to take some time to adjust to the intensity, physical demands and tactical differences of English football. Affengruber, however, has had almost no opportunity for a gradual transition.
Instead, he has been thrown directly into some of the biggest fixtures imaginable and rather than being overwhelmed by the experience, he appears to be embracing every moment.
Speaking to Sky Austria, the defender reflected on what has already been an extraordinary year in his career.
“2026 has been an incredibly beautiful, successful year to date – also a bit crazy. A lot has happened – and in football it’s usually a good sign when a lot happens,” Affengruber said.
His rise has been particularly impressive considering where he started the year. During his time with Elche, he helped the Spanish side achieve their objective of remaining in La Liga, reaching that target on the final matchday of the season.
That achievement was followed by another major milestone when he was given the opportunity to attend the World Cup. After a short summer break, his career took another dramatic turn when Fulham came calling.
Affengruber sees the transfer as another major step forward in his development.
“With the class preservation in La Liga we have reached our goal of the season with Elche in the last game of the season, which was something very special for me,” he explained.
“After that, the huge honor of being able to attend the World Cup. Then this short summer break and right after the restart of the transfer to Fulham. That was a really big step in my career that sounds and feels really good.”
Affengruber had little time to prepare for Anfield test
Affengruber’s introduction to English football could hardly have been more demanding.
The defender was given very little time to settle into his new surroundings before being selected for Fulham’s trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
For many players, making a Premier League debut at one of English football’s most famous stadiums could be an intimidating prospect. Affengruber, however, produced a composed display and helped Fulham secure a valuable point away from home.
Even more impressively, Fulham managed to keep a clean sheet, giving their new defender an ideal introduction to life in England.
Rather than spending too much time worrying about the occasion, Affengruber believes the lack of preparation time may actually have helped him. There was simply no opportunity to overthink the situation.
“It’s all gone extremely fast. I’m sure that helped me get my first game away at Anfield Road,” he admitted.
“There was not much time to think about it. It was just about playing football, focusing on your basics, putting the performance on the pitch and doing what fulfils you.”
The Austrian feels his first couple of appearances have provided a solid foundation, although he knows there is still considerable room for improvement.
“I think I managed that halfway well in my first two games. Of course, there is always room for improvement. I just need to get to know the team even better. I’m sure that will be even better in the coming weeks.”
That growing understanding with his teammates could prove particularly important as the season progresses. The more comfortable Affengruber becomes within Arbeloa’s system, the greater his influence could be at the heart of Fulham’s defence.
Anfield experience will stay with Fulham star
Although Affengruber has already experienced several memorable moments during his short time at Fulham, his first appearance at Anfield appears to hold a special place in his memories.
His opening weeks at the club have already included meetings with Liverpool and Manchester United — two of the most recognisable clubs in English football.
However, playing at Anfield appears to have been the moment that truly captured the magnitude of his move to the Premier League.
The centre-back has previously played at several famous European stadiums, but he believes Liverpool’s home ground stands among the very best.
“I’ve fortunately been allowed to play in a lot of European football temples, but Anfield is certainly one of the best stadiums I’ve played in so far,” he said.
Naturally, there were nerves before and during the opening stages of the match. Affengruber explained that he knew the best way to settle those nerves was to concentrate on the fundamentals of his game.
“Of course, there was nervousness, which is certainly human. In the opening minutes it was important for me that I put on the first passes and won the first duels.”
For a defender making his Premier League debut in such an intimidating environment, starting the game positively was crucial.
“If the first actions succeed, you will find your way around a game better,” he added.
“Then it becomes easier and you automatically develop a good feeling.”
Interestingly, the experience was not completely unfamiliar to Affengruber. He had previously visited Anfield while watching Salzburg play Liverpool with a Youth League squad.
Even then, the stadium had made an impression on him and planted a desire to one day experience the famous atmosphere from the pitch rather than from the stands.
“I remembered that when I watched with the Youth League squad at Anfield when Salzburg played against Liverpool. At that time, I thought to myself, ‘I want to go there too.’”
Now, that childhood ambition has become reality.
“And now to be there on the pitch is an indescribable feeling.”
For Fulham supporters, Affengruber’s early performances will offer plenty of encouragement. The defender has already shown that he is capable of handling the pressure of major Premier League fixtures, and with more time to adapt to his teammates and Arbeloa’s system, there is every reason to believe his impact could grow further.
- What began as a whirlwind transfer has already delivered some unforgettable experiences for the Austrian. With Anfield and Old Trafford now ticked off his list, Affengruber will be hoping the next chapter of his Fulham career brings even more memorable moments.
