Former Stoke City and Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33, bringing an emotional close to a career marked by determination, resilience and a deep connection with the Potters.
Van Ginkel confirmed his decision in a personal statement on Monday, describing a sense of peace and gratitude as he stepped away from the game. While reflecting on his journey through top-level football, the Dutch midfielder reserved special praise for Stoke City, a club he said helped him rediscover happiness and belief during a challenging phase of his career.
“Stoke City will always have a special place in my heart,” Van Ginkel said. “The support from the fans, the staff and my teammates gave me joy and confidence when I needed it most. Once a Potter, always a Potter.”
The midfielder began his professional career at Chelsea after emerging as one of the most promising talents in Dutch football. His time at Stamford Bridge included domestic and European experiences, while loan spells and later moves across Europe shaped a career frequently interrupted by injury setbacks. Despite those challenges, Van Ginkel remained highly regarded for his professionalism and leadership.
His spell at Stoke City proved particularly meaningful. Although injuries limited his appearances, he was a respected figure in the dressing room and admired by supporters for his commitment and attitude. Club sources have previously described him as a model professional whose influence extended beyond matchday contributions.
Stoke City paid tribute following the announcement, thanking Van Ginkel for his dedication and wishing him well in the next chapter of his life. As he closes the door on his playing career at 33, Van Ginkel leaves the game with a message rooted in gratitude and loyalty — sentiments that ensure his bond with Stoke City endures long after retirement.
