With the January transfer window entering its final stretch, Portsmouth are bracing themselves for what could be a hectic conclusion. However, as head coach John Mousinho has explained, the club’s plans are far from straightforward due to a growing injury list and strict squad regulations.

As the countdown continues toward the 7pm deadline on Monday, February 2, Pompey have already made moves in the market. The club has completed three signings so far, bringing in wingers Millenic Alli and Keshi Anderson, along with midfielder Ebou Adams, who has already made a strong impression. Despite this activity, Mousinho is keen to further strengthen his squad, particularly in defence, where a lack of available players has made at least one additional centre-back a priority. There is also the possibility of another reinforcement arriving before the window shuts.

Up front, Mousinho has made it clear that Portsmouth are still searching for a recognised striker. At present, Colby Bishop and young prospect Makenzie Kirk are the only natural number-nine options available to him. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Svante Ingelsson remains a reported target, although his club are believed to be holding out for a £500,000 fee.

While recruitment continues, outgoing transfers may also be necessary. Portsmouth must operate within the EFL’s Championship squad rules, which limit clubs to a 25-man registered squad. The Blues began the window with just one available space, a situation slightly eased when Minhyeok Yang was recalled by Tottenham and subsequently loaned to Coventry City.

Even so, the arrival of three new players means at least one currently registered member of the squad may need to be moved on to stay within regulations. Although Mousinho can deregister players on a match-by-match basis while the window remains open, this only offers short-term flexibility.

Mousinho has previously highlighted Jacob Farrell as a player who could benefit from a loan move to gain more regular game time. However, Portsmouth’s ongoing injury crisis is severely limiting those possibilities. The club currently has 11 players dealing with fitness problems, and Ibane Bowat recently played through a back injury during the south-coast derby draw against Southampton.

With so many players unavailable, Mousinho admits there is little room to allow departures at present. As the deadline approaches, opportunities for loan moves or permanent exits will naturally become harder to arrange, adding another layer of complexity to Portsmouth’s planning.

Speaking about the situation, Mousinho acknowledged the delicate balancing act required during the final days of the window. He explained that the club needs to remain adaptable but, right now, simply does not have the depth to let players go. While he does not expect that stance to change significantly, any further signings would likely force Portsmouth to make tough decisions and move players on to remain compliant with squad limits.
