Three Managers Southampton Could Consider After Tonda Eckert Transfer Interest – Including the Cardiff City Boss
Southampton’s season has experienced a remarkable turnaround under the leadership of Tonda Eckert, following what was initially a very disappointing and difficult return to the Championship.
At the start of the campaign, the Saints had high hopes that the appointment of Will Still during the summer would provide the spark needed to guide the club back to the Premier League. The club’s ambition was clear: secure automatic promotion and quickly return to England’s top flight after relegation.
However, those expectations did not materialize. Still’s time in charge proved to be short-lived, as the 33-year-old struggled to produce consistent results. In total, he managed only 16 games at the helm, with Southampton winning just four of those matches. The poor run of form forced the club to make a managerial change earlier than anticipated.
Tonda Eckert was initially appointed as a temporary solution on an interim basis while the club evaluated its long-term options. Nevertheless, his impact was immediate and impressive. Under his guidance, Southampton began to produce strong performances and positive results, which ultimately convinced the club’s hierarchy to make his appointment permanent.
Despite the success Eckert has achieved so far at St Mary’s Stadium, recent reports suggest that his future at the club may not be entirely secure. According to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, several unnamed clubs from both Serie A in Italy and the Bundesliga in Germany have begun monitoring Eckert’s situation after being impressed by his work with Southampton. Before arriving in England, Eckert had gained experience as an assistant manager at Genoa, which has likely increased his profile across European football.
If interest from overseas clubs intensifies and Southampton eventually lose Eckert, the club would need to act quickly to identify a suitable replacement. With that possibility in mind, Football League World has highlighted three potential managers Southampton could consider should Eckert depart in the near future.
Russell Martin
One potential option for Southampton would be a reunion with Russell Martin, who previously managed the club during their last spell in the Championship.
Martin enjoyed a successful period at St Mary’s, where he guided the team to promotion back to the Premier League. If Southampton remain in the Championship by the summer and require a new head coach, bringing the 40-year-old back could be a logical move for both sides.
The club’s leadership already knows Martin’s abilities and understands that he has the tactical approach and experience needed to achieve promotion from the Championship. At the same time, Martin may also be looking to rebuild his managerial reputation after a relatively brief and underwhelming spell at Rangers.
Although Southampton struggled during their time in the Premier League under Martin, that period should not necessarily discourage the club from considering him again. His possession-based and attacking style of football has already proven effective at Championship level, and he could once again be well suited to Southampton’s squad, which features several strong attacking players capable of thriving in his system.
Brian Barry-Murphy
Another interesting candidate Southampton could look at is Brian Barry-Murphy, who is currently doing impressive work with Cardiff City.
The Irish manager is close to guiding Cardiff back to the Championship at the first attempt after their relegation to League One. Since taking charge in the summer, Barry-Murphy has adapted quickly to the demands of the division and has led the Bluebirds to a strong campaign.
Despite this being only the second senior managerial role of his career, Barry-Murphy has already developed a reputation as a coach who can nurture and improve young players. During previous roles at Rochdale and with Manchester City’s Under-21 side, he demonstrated a clear ability to develop emerging talent.
This aspect of his coaching profile would be particularly attractive to Southampton. The club has long been known for its successful academy system, which has produced numerous top-level players over the years. A manager who values youth development would align well with the club’s philosophy.
In addition, Barry-Murphy’s teams are often praised for playing an attractive, attacking style of football that fans enjoy watching. Although he is now 47, he is still relatively early in his managerial career, meaning Southampton could potentially secure a promising long-term project if they were to appoint him.
Miron Muslic
A third manager who could be on Southampton’s radar is Miron Muslic, who previously impressed in English football with Plymouth Argyle.
Muslic attracted significant attention last season after taking charge of Plymouth during a difficult relegation battle. Although he ultimately fell short of keeping the club in the Championship, many observers believed he did an excellent job under extremely challenging circumstances. There is a strong argument that Plymouth might have avoided relegation had he been appointed earlier in the campaign.
During the summer, the Bosnian coach moved to Germany to take over at Schalke. Since arriving in Gelsenkirchen, he has continued to build on his reputation as a capable and tactically astute manager.
Under Muslic’s leadership, Schalke have been performing strongly in the 2. Bundesliga and currently sit at the top of the table. If they maintain their form, the club could secure promotion back to the Bundesliga.
Should Southampton find themselves in need of a new manager in the future, Muslic could represent a compelling option. He has already shown that he understands the demands of the Championship and might welcome another opportunity to prove himself in English football.
