Just a week after entering the transfer portal, BYU guard Robert Wright III announced on Wednesday that he will return to play for head coach Kevin Young and the Cougars next season, per On3’s Joe Tipton.
Wright, a quick, score-first guard, shot 41% from three-point range and recorded multiple 30-point performances last season while leading a potent BYU offense. Alongside highly touted prospect AJ Dybantsa, the Cougars reached their third consecutive tournament appearance but were eliminated by Texas in the opening round.
His decision is a setback for Kentucky and head coach Mark Pope, who recently hosted Wright on an official visit. Wright has the potential to develop into an All-SEC caliber player—something Kentucky could use following Otega Oweh’s departure this offseason. Pope has also seen several players exit via the transfer portal, including Collin Chandler (BYU), Brandon Garrison (Alabama), and Denzel Aberdeen (Florida).
With much of last season’s roster gone, Pope faces a significant challenge in rebuilding the team. Kentucky is currently one of only five programs yet to secure a transfer portal commitment this offseason.
