The LSU Tigers men’s basketball may have hoped to retain a 6-foot-11 forward for Will Wade’s upcoming season, but those plans have changed, as the player is now headed to Kansas State Wildcats men’s basketball.
LSU transfer Matt Gilhool commits to Kansas State
First-year head coach Casey Alexander continues to make waves in the transfer portal, adding size to his roster with former LSU redshirt freshman Matt Gilhool. Unlike many of the team’s other newcomers, Gilhool has yet to log any game minutes at the college level.
He spent last season developing off the court under former LSU coach Matt McMahon. During McMahon’s final year, LSU struggled to a 15–17 overall record and a 3–15 mark in SEC play, extending their NCAA Tournament drought to four seasons.
While Gilhool remains relatively unknown at the collegiate level, he chose Kansas State over several other programs, including Georgia Bulldogs men’s basketball, Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball, Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball, and Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball.
Strong high school production offers promise
Gilhool graduated from William Penn Charter School in the 2025 class after reclassifying and was rated the No. 121 overall prospect as a four-star recruit. In his senior year, he averaged 16 points and nine rebounds—solid numbers that highlight his potential as a developing big man.
He becomes Kansas State’s sixth transfer portal addition, joining players such as Brock Vice from Murray State Racers men’s basketball, former Colorado State Rams men’s basketball guard Brandon Rechsteiner, Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball transfer Jaden Schutt, and ex-Oregon Ducks men’s basketball standout Dezdrick Lindsay.
