Can Southampton Still Secure Automatic Promotion?

“Smart Timing – Southampton struck Ralph Hassenhuttl £5m transfer gold after Chelsea decision.

Just a few weeks ago, the idea of Southampton finishing the season in an automatic promotion place seemed highly unrealistic. At that point, even reaching the play-off positions looked uncertain. However, football can change quickly, and after a remarkable run of form, Saints have suddenly given themselves a genuine opportunity to finish in the top two.

While the possibility is now real, Southampton’s fate is not entirely in their own hands. They must continue winning their remaining matches while also relying on results elsewhere to fall in their favour.

From Play-Off Hopefuls to Promotion Contenders

When the team returned from the international break at the start of April, the main focus was simply breaking into the play-off spots. Even that was far from guaranteed.

Ahead of the trip to Wrexham on April 7th, there was a strong feeling that defeat could seriously damage Southampton’s hopes of even making the top six.

Instead, the exact opposite happened.

A superb run of four consecutive victories this month has transformed Southampton’s season. What once looked like a battle merely to secure a play-off place has now become a serious push for automatic promotion.

The Current Promotion Race

Coventry have already secured promotion and are close to confirming the Championship title. That leaves one remaining automatic promotion place available, with four clubs battling to claim it.

The standings are currently:

Ipswich – Played 42, 76 points, Goal Difference +29, Maximum 88 points

Millwall – Played 43, 76 points, Goal Difference +11, Maximum 85 points

Southampton – Played 43, 75 points, Goal Difference +24, Maximum 84 points

Middlesbrough – Played 43, 73 points, Goal Difference +20, Maximum 82 points

Based on the table, Ipswich remain favourites, but with several matches still to play and a full Championship schedule during the week, the picture could change very quickly.

What Southampton Need

The reality is straightforward: Southampton likely need Ipswich to lose to Saints and also drop points in at least one of their other remaining fixtures.

If Ipswich were to lose one game and draw another, they would finish on 83 points. If Southampton win all three of their remaining matches, Saints would end the season on 84 points and move above them.

Goal difference could also become crucial, and Southampton’s healthy +24 gives them a stronger position than Millwall, though Ipswich still currently hold the best differential.

Important Midweek Fixtures

Southampton’s immediate task is clear: defeat Bristol City at St Mary’s on Tuesday night.

Other key fixtures include:

Stoke City vs Millwall

Charlton vs Ipswich

Middlesbrough vs Sheffield Wednesday

For every side involved in the race, the margin for error is tiny. Wins are essential. Any dropped points could prove costly.

The Weekend Schedule

Attention then turns to the weekend, beginning with Friday night:

Leicester vs Millwall

Southampton supporters will be hoping Leicester can take points from Millwall, though Leicester’s own circumstances may affect the contest.

Saturday’s fixtures are:

Middlesbrough vs Watford

West Brom vs Ipswich

On paper, Millwall may have a favourable opportunity to strengthen their position by the end of the weekend.

The Defining Clash: Southampton vs Ipswich

Perhaps the biggest match of the run-in comes on Tuesday 28th April:

Southampton vs Ipswich

Many will see this fixture as the game most likely to determine who claims second place. A Southampton win would dramatically increase Saints’ hopes, while an Ipswich victory could all but settle the race.

Final Day Fixtures

The season concludes with the following matches:

Ipswich vs Queens Park Rangers

Millwall vs Oxford United

Preston vs Southampton

Wrexham vs Middlesbrough

With such a varied set of fixtures, predicting who will finish second remains difficult.

How Costly Was That Late Goal?

From Southampton’s perspective, there may be frustration over moments earlier in the season—particularly the dramatic 98th-minute winner conceded to Millwall at The Den.

Had Southampton avoided that late setback:

Saints would now have 76 points

Ipswich would still have 76 points

Millwall would be on 74 points

That single moment may yet prove decisive in the promotion race.

Priority Must Still Be Securing Third or Fourth

While automatic promotion is now possible, Southampton must remain realistic and focused.

The immediate priority should still be finishing third or fourth. Doing so would offer a major advantage in the play-off semi-finals, including a more favourable tie and potentially the second leg at home.

Only three weeks ago, Southampton were uncertain of even making the play-offs. Now they could mathematically secure their place—and possibly guarantee at least fourth spot—with victory over Bristol City.

That alone highlights how dramatically things have changed.

Pressure Is on the Others

Another positive for Saints is that the pressure now largely sits with Ipswich, Millwall, and Middlesbrough.

If those teams continue winning, Southampton’s task remains the same: keep winning their own matches.

But if any of them slip up, Southampton gain not only points advantage opportunities but also psychological momentum heading into the final stretch.

Two Fronts to Fight For

Southampton also have an FA Cup semi-final to look forward to, making this one of the most exciting moments of the season.

The club now has everything to play for on two fronts:

Promotion to the Premier League

A chance for major cup success

What looked like an ordinary finish to the campaign has become something potentially memorable.

Fans Have a Huge Role to Play

This is also the moment for supporters to rise with the team.

More than 33,000 Saints fans are expected to travel to Wembley on Saturday, with that number possibly increasing if more tickets become available.

However, it is disappointing that around 1,000 tickets still remain for the crucial Bristol City game at St Mary’s, especially given its importance.

The following home game against Ipswich is in much stronger demand, with only around 250 tickets left and a sell-out expected.

For the final day trip to Preston, Southampton fans are also expected to travel in large numbers. Only around 500 of the 5,600 allocated tickets remain unsold, and those could disappear quickly if Saints keep winning.

A Season That Could Still Become Special

A few short weeks ago, Southampton fans were hoping merely to sneak into the play-offs.

Now, automatic promotion is a realistic possibility.

The message is simple: keep winning, keep believing, and see where the final weeks take them. This season still has the potential to become one to remember.
