Derby County have confirmed the return of Sam Szmodics from Ipswich Town, making the experienced attacker their fourth signing of the summer transfer window.
The 29-year-old has rejoined the Rams on a season-long loan, with the agreement including an obligation to make the move permanent. The clause is believed to be worth around £2.7 million and is expected to be triggered based on appearance-related conditions.
Head coach John Eustace was determined to bring Szmodics back to Pride Park after the forward impressed during a loan spell in the second half of last season, scoring three goals in 13 appearances. Having previously enjoyed great success together at Blackburn Rovers, where Szmodics scored more than 30 goals under Eustace, Derby hope the pair can recreate that form in the Championship.
Szmodics could make his first appearance of the campaign as early as Saturday when Derby take on Burton Albion. Despite Ipswich earning promotion to the Premier League, the Republic of Ireland international was no longer part of the club’s long-term plans, even though he still has two years remaining on his contract.
Meanwhile, Derby could soon receive a major financial boost. Saudi businessman and boxing figure Turki Alalshikh is reportedly close to completing a significant investment in the club after passing the required English Football League checks. The deal is now awaiting final approval from the Independent Football Regulator, with optimism that it will be completed in the coming days.
Although the financial details have not been made public, current owner David Clowes is expected to remain as chairman. With an estimated fortune of around £2.8 billion, Alalshikh’s involvement would make Derby one of the wealthiest clubs in the Championship.
The Rams will still need to comply with spending regulations, which limit clubs to using 85 percent of their revenue while allowing owners to inject up to £33 million over three seasons. Even so, the proposed investment could open the door to major sponsorship opportunities, increase Derby’s international profile, and strengthen their ambitions of returning to the Premier League.
Derby are expected to remain active in the transfer market before the window closes, with a striker, wide players, and central midfielders all among their top priorities as Eustace continues to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion.
