Cruel Twist! Reds’ No. 3 Prospect Rodríguez Robbed of First MLB Hit During Debut

CINCINNATI — The Reds welcomed a new face to their clubhouse on Tuesday, but it wasn’t a player acquired before Monday’s Trade Deadline. Instead, the arrival was highly regarded prospect Héctor Rodríguez, whose journey to Cincinnati began when he was included in the 2022 deadline deal that sent Tyler Naquin to the Mets.

Looking back on that trade, Rodríguez admitted it was an emotional experience. Leaving the organization that first believed in him was difficult, and he initially worried about having to start over in a new environment. Four years later, however, those concerns have faded as he finally realized his dream of reaching the Major Leagues with Cincinnati.

The 22-year-old earned his promotion from Triple-A Louisville after the Reds dealt Nathaniel Lowe to the Cleveland Guardians. He made his MLB debut in Tuesday’s 5-4 victory over the Athletics, starting in right field.

Although Rodríguez finished the game 0-for-2, he reached base with a walk in the fifth inning and later crossed the plate on Elly De La Cruz’s two-run single.

He came agonizingly close to recording his first Major League hit in the seventh inning, lining a pitch into shallow left field. However, Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson made an impressive leaping catch to take the hit away, drawing loud disappointment from the Cincinnati crowd.

For Rodríguez, simply stepping onto a Major League field was a lifelong ambition fulfilled. Signed by the Mets out of the Dominican Republic in 2021 for a $100,000 bonus, he described making his debut as the realization of a childhood dream.

The left-handed hitter forced his way onto the Reds’ roster after an outstanding season at Triple-A Louisville, where he batted .274 with an .880 OPS, 27 home runs and 69 RBIs across 104 games. His impressive campaign also featured a three-home-run performance in May and a cycle in June.

Fellow rookie Sal Stewart believes Rodríguez is ready for the challenge, praising his confidence, talent and fearless approach after the pair progressed through the Reds’ farm system together.

Rodríguez also credited his experiences in the Reds’ Major League Spring Training camps over the past two years for helping prepare him. Spending time around veterans such as Elly De La Cruz, Eugenio Suárez and Noelvi Marte gave him valuable advice that he says has shaped his development.

The Reds are expected to use Rodríguez primarily in the outfield while also giving him opportunities at designated hitter. While his defense has been viewed as an area for improvement, his offensive upside has made him one of the organization’s most exciting young players. Earlier in his professional career with the Mets, Rodríguez played second and third base before transitioning exclusively to the outfield after joining Cincinnati.
