Liam Thompson has brought his lengthy spell at Derby County to an end after completing a permanent move to Mansfield Town.
The midfielder has signed a two-year contract with the League One side for an undisclosed transfer fee, with only one year remaining on his deal at Pride Park.
Mansfield identified Thompson as one of their priority targets this summer, with former Derby manager Nigel Clough eager to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign as the Stags aim to push for promotion.
Although the transfer was temporarily delayed while Thompson travelled with Derby on their pre-season tour of Austria, Mansfield remained committed to signing the academy graduate. Their persistence has now paid off, with Thompson finalising the move after being omitted from Derby’s recent friendly matches against Burton Albion and Rotherham United.
Derby were willing to sanction the transfer, recognising that Thompson’s opportunities for regular first-team football were likely to be limited. The Rams are expected to strengthen their midfield further once the proposed investment from Turki Alalshikh receives approval.
Thompson departs after spending more than a decade with Derby, progressing through the club’s academy before making his senior debut under Wayne Rooney during the 2020/21 season.
He leaves Pride Park with over 100 appearances to his name and played a key role in Derby’s promotion back to the Championship under Paul Warne. His passionate celebrations following that achievement made him a firm favourite among supporters.
At Mansfield, Thompson will now look to establish himself as a regular starter and continue the next chapter of his career.
His departure leaves Lewis Travis, Oscar Fraulo, Kenzo Goudmijn and Bobby Clark among Derby’s current central midfield options, although Clark is generally deployed in a more advanced attacking role.
Meanwhile, head coach John Eustace remains interested in bringing Crystal Palace midfielder David Ozoh back to the club for a third spell. Speaking recently, Eustace described a permanent move for Ozoh as a “great addition” as Derby continue their efforts to strengthen the squad.
