Brighton & Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber has offered an important update on Carlos Baleba’s future as Manchester United continue their pursuit of the highly rated midfielder.
The Cameroon international has reportedly become one of United’s main targets as Michael Carrick looks to strengthen his midfield options before the transfer window closes. Baleba, 22, has established himself as an important player for Brighton since joining the club from Lille, attracting attention from several of the Premier League’s leading sides.
Speaking to talkSPORT about the ongoing speculation, Barber refused to rule out the possibility of a transfer but stressed that Brighton would only consider an offer that works financially for the club.
Barber explained that Brighton regularly receive approaches for their players at this stage of the window and will consider proposals that make financial and sporting sense.
Manchester United are understood to be keen to add another central midfielder following Casemiro’s departure and an injury to Manuel Ugarte, which has reduced Carrick’s options in the middle of the pitch. United have already strengthened their squad this summer, with Andrey Santos reportedly arriving from Chelsea for £48 million and Youri Tielemans joining after the club triggered his £35m release clause at Aston Villa.
Reports have claimed that United have now stepped up their interest in Baleba with an opening offer worth £60 million plus a further £5m in potential add-ons. Brighton are believed to value the midfielder higher, although discussions between the two clubs are understood to be continuing.
Barber also highlighted the importance of maintaining a competitive squad, particularly with Brighton involved in European competition. The Seagulls will have to weigh any potential sale against their ambitions for the season and the need to remain strong across multiple competitions.
Despite the growing speculation, Barber made it clear that Brighton remain aware of Baleba’s importance and the level of interest he has generated.
The Brighton chief described Baleba as a hugely talented young midfielder who has performed exceptionally well for the club and has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in world football.
For now, Baleba’s future remains uncertain, with Manchester United continuing to monitor the situation closely as the transfer deadline approaches.
