Quévin Castro tragically died after collapsing during a training match while representing Portuguese third-tier side Real Sport Clube (Massamá) on Saturday.
The midfielder became unwell just 10 minutes into the friendly against Primeira Liga outfit Estrela da Amadora, which was played in Malveira. Medical staff immediately rushed to his aid, with a club doctor attempting to revive him using a defibrillator before Portugal’s National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) was called.
Castro was subsequently taken to hospital, but sadly he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Estrela da Amadora released a statement expressing its condolences to Castro’s family, friends and everyone connected with Real Massamá, describing the situation as a moment of “profound sadness” and ending with a tribute to the player.
His former club Eastbourne Borough also expressed their shock following the news. The Isthmian League Premier Division side said they were “devastated” by the passing of their former player and sent their thoughts to his family.
Castro had only recently been playing for the English seventh-tier club before returning to Portugal earlier this summer.
Born in Portugal, Castro was raised in Norfolk and attended Thetford Academy. During his career in English football, he represented several clubs, including West Bromwich Albion, Burton Albion, Notts County, York City and Cambridge City.
He also had trial spells with Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea, having built a career across both English and Portuguese football.
