Kentucky Football Hit With Fresh NCAA Blow as Major Twist Puts Key Star’s Season in Doubt
Kentucky football has been handed a fresh eligibility setback, with the latest NCAA-related court development casting further doubt over whether key linebacker Alex Afari Jr. will be able to play for the Wildcats in 2026.
Afari recently returned to Kentucky and was cleared to practice after a court ruling opened the door for members of the 2022 recruiting class to pursue an additional season of eligibility. However, his situation remained unresolved, with head coach Will Stein confirming that Afari could practice while his competition eligibility was still under review.
That uncertainty has now intensified following an August 21 ruling from the Tenth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. The court granted the NCAA’s request for a stay, removing the federal eligibility protection that had benefited athletes from the 2022 class, including Afari.
The development could be a significant blow to Kentucky’s defensive plans. Afari was one of the team’s most productive defenders last season, recording 61 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 10 games.
Kentucky is already dealing with an eligibility loss after transfer edge rusher Antonio O’Berry was ruled ineligible for the 2026 season. O’Berry recorded 52 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season, making his absence another challenge for Stein’s revamped defense.
For now, Afari’s playing status remains uncertain, leaving Kentucky fans waiting for further clarification as the new season approaches.
