Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of experienced defender Reece James, who has returned to the club on a one-year contract that will keep him with the Owls until the end of the current season.
James had been a free agent after leaving Rotherham United at the conclusion of last season. The 32-year-old is already very familiar with Sheffield Wednesday, having previously spent two years at the club between 2022 and 2024. During that period, he made a total of 80 appearances and became an important part of the squad.
Although he scored only one goal during his previous spell with Wednesday, it was a particularly memorable and significant one. His goal came during the club’s dramatic 5-1 victory over Peterborough United in the play-off semi-final in May 2023. That famous result helped the Owls progress before they eventually secured promotion at Wembley.
Sheffield Wednesday’s sporting director, Simon Wilson, expressed his confidence that James would be a valuable addition to the team. He explained that the defender already has a strong emotional connection with the club because of his previous time there and believes that his experience and familiarity with Sheffield Wednesday make him well suited to the club’s current needs.
